Al Roker Reveals What Used To Cause Him to Overeat and Why He’s ‘Never Going Back to Fat’

Al Roker is the picture of fitness and health. He’s lost over a hundred pounds since gastric bypass surgery he had in 2002. But it hasn’t been a cakewalk by any means. Roker has made it clear in the past that losing this weight, keeping it off, and at times gaining and losing again is a daily struggle.

Roker on his ‘mixed-weight’ marriage

Roker has dealt with weight issues since his childhood. He loved to eat and just couldn’t help himself. In his 2012 book, Never Goin’ Back, the Today Show personality remembers when his weight began to bother him – when Bill Cosby’s Fat Albert animated series surfaced on TV.

He told NPR in 2013, “I’m black, I’m fat, my name is Albert. It was the embodiment of who I had become.” It led to a great deal of teasing by his classmates, which Roker said he learned to navigate by being the funny fat kid.

Roker says his girth became like a ‘third person’ in his marriage to journalist Deborah Roberts of ABC News. Roberts would urge Roker to get fit, causing endless conflict between them, as Roker revealed in an article for Today.

“It’s one thing if you’re both overweight, but when we’re talking about couples who are mixed-weight (I love the term mixed-weight couples; I’ve heard of mixed-race couples, but mixed-weight?!), it plays a big deal, especially if one person is active and healthy and the other person is a bit of a couch potato.”

Roker’s turning point

The 65-year-old finally decided to have gastric bypass surgery in 2002, after promising his father, dying of lung cancer, that he would lose weight.

“ said, ‘Look, I’m not going to be here for your kids. And you’ve got to be here for your kids. So I want you to promise me you’re going to lose weight,’” the morning show staple wrote in his book.

“I don’t know if you’ve ever had to make a deathbed promise to someone you love, but if you have, you know the kind of guilt and massive responsibility I felt in that moment.”

After the surgery, Roker lost 100 pounds. In 2011, his mother was hospitalized, causing him to revert to unhelpful eating habits. He gained back 40 pounds by the time she passed away.

“I was out of my routine, commuting to see her, and feeling guilty…,” Roker told Parade in 2012. “I consoled myself with food. I got blindsided and, I think, to a ­certain extent, I got cocky.”

‘I’m thrilled about where I am’

Roker told Today in 2013, “I’m thrilled about where I am,” Roker said. “Life is terrific; I wouldn’t trade it for a moment. But you always wonder where you would be if ‘x’ hadn’t happened. I’m thrilled that I’ve finally got to this place at 58 years old. I finally got it figured out. I feel good about it.”

Roker has been able to maintain his weight by working on his strength and watching how much he eats. He saw recent success with more dropped pounds through the Keto diet.

He told People early this year that he was able to lose 10 pounds in two weeks on the Keto diet. The worst part? Having to avoid bread.

“The toughest part is not eating bread,” Roker said. “Last weekend I was in Paris to drop my daughter off at school for her sophomore year. I think it’s the first time in 35 years going to Paris, but I did not have any croissant or any bread.”

How Much Weight Did Al Roker Really Lose on the Keto Diet?

Trainer and fitness guru Jillian Michaels recently slammed the popular keto diet, saying it’s bad idea for people who want to lose weight and get healthy. She says the diet can lead to nutrient deficiencies and that eating clean and reducing calories is a better plan. Her comments prompted a strong response from some fellow celebrities, who defended the trendy yet controversial diet.

Today show meteorologist Al Roker was one person who was upset about Michaels comments about the high-fat, low-carb diet. He shot back with a negative tweet about The Biggest Loser star, saying she promoted “bullying” and “manipulation” in the name of weight loss.

One reason that Roker was quick to call out Michaels for criticizing the keto diet? He’s one of the many Americans who say they’ve lost weight on the plan.

Roker says he lost 10 pounds after two weeks on the keto diet

Roker told People earlier this year that in the first two weeks on the keto diet he lost 10 pounds. He said the most difficult part of the diet was avoiding carbs like bread.

“The toughest part is not eating bread,” Roker said. “Last weekend I was in Paris to drop my daughter off at school for her sophomore year. I think it’s the first time in 35 years going to Paris, but I did not have any croissant or any bread.”

People on the keto diet usually eat less than 50 grams of carbs a day. To put that in perspective, a person not on a low-carb diet who eats 2,000 calories per day should normally aim to eat 225 to 325 grams of carbs per day, according to Healthline.

Sticking with the keto diet for the long haul can be a challenge for some, and Roker has admitted he occasionally gives in to his cravings. In December, he confessed that he “fell off the keto wagon” at the NBC Nightly News Christmas party.

Why Roker says he likes the keto diet

Roker started the keto diet in September 2018. Not only has he lost weight, but he says his cholesterol and blood pressure readings have improved since he adopted the eating plan.

“I started September 1. I’ve been checking my blood work and vitals every month, and my cholesterol got better — it was good to begin with. My blood pressure is great,” he said on the Today show.

Roker has shared keto-friendly meals on the Today show and social media, including his egg muffins and a “meatzza.”

Roker thinks people should do what works for them

The 64-year-old Roker – who has struggled with his weight in the past and had a gastric bypass in 2002 — says keto has worked for him, but he admits it might not be for everyone. He agrees that there’s scientific disagreement about the benefits and risks of the keto diet, and says people should talk to their doctor before deciding what weight loss approach is right for them.

“My point is, what works for you, works for you,” he said. “There’s science on both sides that says it’s not a great idea and science that says it is a great idea. I think it’s up to people, with their doctor, with their medical professional .”

Al Roker is sharing how he lost 40 lbs on the Keto Diet and it involved a lot of fat, vegetables, meat, and no apologies. The Today co-host started the diet in September and has seen a steady drop in pounds and an increase in energy, with Roker vocal on screen and social media about the success of his new food choices.

On Monday, the 64-year-old news anchor showed off his keto cooking skills during a segment on The Today Show, making keto-friendly sloppy joes, including low-carb bread. Roker shared the recipe and the meal with co-hosts Hoda Kotb and Savannah Guthrie, with Guthrie admitting that she and Roker both started eating keto-friendly at the same time, but she has since stopped. We get it. Carbs are sugary pieces of deliciousness.

The Keto Diet, which focuses on high-fat, low-carbs, has gained prominence in the last two years, with many split on whether the diet is a safe and healthy way to approach weight loss. Some celebrities, like trainer Jillian Michaels, have been outspoken about what she sees as the dangers of Keto, with Michaels and Roker going head to head, or tweet to tweet, on social media.

Roker has remained focused on sharing his journey with Keto on his social media page, posting pictures of his meals, which we’re pretty sure even Michaels would agree look delicious.

Roker has been vocal for years about his difficult journey with weight loss. After spending much of his life overweight, the weatherman underwent gastric bypass surgery in 2002, losing 100 pounds. The TV host began implementing exercise into his daily life, including training for and completing the Chicago and New York City Marathons in 2010. In 2011, following the death of his mother, a grieving Roker had a setback and gained 40 pounds.

Following the weight gain, Roker went on a 28-day detox, which he details in his book Never Goin’ Back. Cutting out caffeine, alcohol, sugar, dairy, and gluten, Roker committed to consuming unprocessed foods with a focus on protein and limiting his intake on carbs, a diet that has all the trademarks of Keto. After making the full transition to Keto in 2018, Roker is down to around 190 pounds. On Monday’s Today Show cooking segment, Roker reported that his levels, including his cholesterol, often a point of contention for anti-Keto fans, are great.

So, good fats, in moderation.

Unnecessary, and even potentially harmful. That’s my opinion of sugar detoxes.

This isn’t a new fad, but it seems to be making a huge comeback. The promised benefits from a sugar detox include losing weight, higher energy, better sense of well-being, and more. Who wouldn’t be tempted by that, right?

But as we’ve covered before, you should avoid detoxes and cleanses, and sugar is no different.

The hosts of the Today show recently endured a 10-day sugar detox, and viewers likely joined them in the sugarless adventure. While some people champion the benefits from abstaining entirely from added sugar, I believe there are seven great reasons why you should not do a sugar detox.

1) Can actually lead to weight gain.

This one is going to confuse people because one of the main reasons people do a sugar detox is to lose weight.

Hoda Kotb, host of the Today show, said during her sugar detox, “I’ve gained two pounds since I’ve been on it,” because she kept reaching for things like potato chips to satisfy her sugar craving she couldn’t fill. “I’m eating stuff I don’t really like” and “I had two cough drops before the show, because they tasted sweet” she went on to say openly about some of the not-so-great effects from the detox.

She later asked her co-host Kathie Lee, “Why am I gaining weight? Why?”

The answer is simple. Because she wasn’t “allowed” to eat anything with added sugar, she was reaching for other high calorie foods to satisfy her craving. And since she gained two pounds it’s likely due to water retention (from all the salt) and/or because she was eating more than she did prior to the sugar detox.

This isn’t uncommon and I’ve seen it happen with others who go on a sugar detox, or avoid any other food group. We fill a craving for the things we can’t have with whatever else is available, even if we don’t really like those foods. Sometimes this means we eat more food than we were previously.

Once upon a time, I attempted to avoid added sugar, and that meant saying an emotional good-bye to my spoonful of sugar I put in my coffee. I experienced the same thing Hoda did — I found myself eating much more of the foods I “could” have than I did before avoiding sugar. I finally realized, “I’m better off consuming 50 or so calories of pure sugar than an extra 300 or so calories from fat.” More on this in a moment.

2) Can lead to binges and other disordered eating habits.

I can’t recall how many times someone told me they did a sugar detox and then the second it was over they ate copious amounts of sugar. It turns into an unrestrained sugar binge that’s typically justified by statements such as, “I didn’t eat sugar for X number of days, so I deserve this!”

Eliminating entire foods or food groups (and sugar, in this case) can lead to, or increase existing, disordered eating habits; it’s a huge reason why I’m not a fan of detoxes of any kind.

It makes no sense to eliminate sugar for 10 days just to eat 10 days worth of sugar the moment the detox is over.

3) Can lead to a “damage control” mentality.

Many who attempt a sugar detox inevitably slip up at least once, and that often leads to them feeling like a failure. In a desperate attempt to “undo the damage” from the slip up they go into damage control mode, and either vow to restrict their calories or endure the detox for a longer period of time. Or they try to remedy the situation an punish themselves with an extra workout.

This is negative reinforcement and only leads to more trouble, and is another reason to avoid sugar detoxes.

4) For most people it’s not sustainable long-term.

While some people may glean information from a sugar detox about how much excess sugar they did eat on a daily basis, it’s not practical for most people to avoid added sugar long-term because, let’s face it, there are some super delicious foods made with sugar.

Ice cream. A freshly baked pastry. Chocolate dipped fruit. Sugar in your morning coffee.

Abstaining from sugar long-term is impractical, and therefore attempting to do so is a waste of time and could have negative consequences, as discussed here.

If something doesn’t create a sustainable, long-term habit, why even waste your time or put yourself through the frustration? Avoiding sugar long-term is not going to happen for most people, so doing it for 7-10 days isn’t necessary.

5) Sugar is not evil and is not the sole contributor to fat gain.

Calories matter when it comes to losing or gaining fat. Despite what some would have you believe, eliminating sugar does not magically make you lose fat.

If you recall, a professor of human nutrition ate mostly sugary, processed foods (e.g., snack cakes, chips, cookies, sugary cereals) for two months. He maintained a caloric deficit (this is important!) and lost 27 pounds and improved his cholesterol. Keep in mind he wasn’t doing this to say this is how people should eat, but rather to show the importance of overall calories, regardless of the main source.

So if you were eating 2,000 calories before your sugar detox and starting eating 2,300 calories during your sugar detox (perhaps because you were eating other foods you typically didn’t in an effort to satisfy a craving) then you’re likely going to gain weight. It’s simple math.

(Note: Can eating too much refined sugar cause health problems? Of course. Eating too much of anything can have consequences, but right now we’re talking strictly about fat loss and gain.)

This is also why some people do lose weight during a sugar detox, because they’re eating fewer total calories since they removed foods from their daily eating habits — usually calorie-dense, hyperpalatable foods like desserts, fast food, etc. For more information regarding the truth about sugar, I’ll refer you to Alan Aragon because when it comes to the science behind sugar, he’s more qualified than I am.

6) A sugar detox is not necessary to jump-start a healthy lifestyle.

Many people embark on a sugar detox to kick-off a healthier lifestyle and better eating habits.

I think it does the exact opposite.

Having to abstain from something entirely usually isn’t fun, and I’ll bet you know from personal experience. Did you ever avoid sugar or some other food group for a period of time? Remember how miserable it was? Remember impatiently waiting for it to be over?

Doing something difficult, stressful, and impractical in an effort to jump-start a healthier lifestyle is counterproductive, and should be avoided.

If you want to experience a simple, stress free way to “jump-start” your routine, try one of these 30 day challenges instead. The goal should always be to adopt new, simple habits you can sustain long-term, not to suffer through a 10 day detox that will end with you diving face first into a gallon of ice cream or funneling sugar like you’re at a frat party (Go! Go! Go!).

7) Most people do a sugar detox because they want to lose weight — forget about weight loss. Be MORE.

Women are constantly compelled to focus on how they look. We feel obligated to look a certain way and are encouraged to attain that look by any means necessary. Many women are always on some sort of diet or doing the latest detox.

It’s time to reject this diet-constantly mentality and choose to be MORE.

Don’t Detox, but Do Be Aware

Sugar is not evil and you don’t need to avoid it entirely (unless told otherwise by your physician) nor should you eat it in copious amounts, throwing caution to the wind. As in many cases, moderation is the key.

When it comes to including added sugar in your diet, my rule of thumb is simple: eat the things you truly enjoy, and eliminate the things you don’t. Let’s break down both parts of that sentence. (Please note I’m referring to added sugar and not naturally occurring sugars in fruits and other whole foods.)

Eat the things you truly enjoy. For example, my main sources of added sugar are a spoonful of sugar in my morning coffee and the occasional bowl of ice cream. I very much enjoy my morning cup of coffee, and it wouldn’t be the same without sugar. This is not an option because if I excluded sugar, my coffee just wouldn’t be the same enjoyable experience, and I know I’d be reaching for something else to satisfy that craving later in the day that would likely be higher in calories than a simple spoonful of sugar.

Second, my favorite dessert is ice cream, and I enjoy it guilt-free when I truly crave it, which is maybe once a week or so. I also enjoy special foods when traveling that I can’t get at home such as pastries, homemade caramels or chocolates, or other baked goods.

You should do the same: eat the things you enjoy most, and that brings us to the second part …

Eliminate the things you don’t truly enjoy. If you consume excess sugar from fruit juice or other snacks you randomly include throughout the day but don’t truly enjoy them, cut back or eliminate those things.

A helpful way to view this is to think about having an allowance. If you only have $20 to spend per day, you’re going to put some thought in what you buy and (hopefully) not blow it all on the first thing you see. You’ll ask questions like, “Will I enjoy this? Is it worth it?” and make a conscious decision. You can approach what you choose to eat that includes added sugars in the same way. Don’t guzzle down a large soda when you know you’d enjoy a couple scoops of ice cream much more.

Furthermore, choose your battles. Don’t obsess over something like a spoonful of sugar in your coffee is that is something you truly enjoy. Focus on the BIG things that matter more – the bare essentials – and save yourself the unnecessary stress and frustration.

Today Show meteorologist Al Roker, who also co-hosts the NBC morning show’s third hour, is married to Deborah Roberts. The 56-year-old Roberts is a journalist, working at ABC News.

Rocker and Roberts have two children, Leila Roker (born in 1998) and Nicholas Albert Roker (born in 2002). Roker also has a daughter, Courtney Roker (born in 1987), from his marriage to Alice Bell from 1984 to 1994. Roker has an estimated net worth of $30 million, Celebrity Net Worth estimates.

Here’s a look at Roberts’ career and her relationship with Roker.

1. Roberts Is an Accomplished Journalist Who Has Been at ABC News Since 1995

Roberts graduated from the University of Georgia in 1982 and began her career in journalism in Columbus, Georgia. She then moved to Knoxville, Tennessee, working at WBIR-TV. During the late 1980s, she was the bureau chief for the ABC affiliate in Orlando, Florida and covered NASA.

Her national network career began at NBC News in 1990, notes Roberts’ ABC News profile. She started as a general assignment correspondent, reporting from Atlanta and Miami. She covered the aftermath of the Persian Gulf War and earned an Emmy nomination for her coverage of the 1992 Summer Olympics in Barcelona.

In 1995, she moved over to ABC News, reporting for 20/20 and occasionally working as a substitute anchor on World News Tonight Weekend and Good Morning America. She has been with the network ever since and continues to contribute to the national broadcasts.

In May, Roberts got the first interview with Celine Dion after her husband, Rene Angelil, died.

2. Roberts Came Up With the Idea of Writing a Book About Their Marriage, but Roker Didn’t Want to

In January 2016, the couple published Been There, Done That: Family wisdom From Modern Times, written with Laura Morton. The idea behind the book was Roberts’, since Roker wasn’t too keen on letting the world know about their marriage.

“While I have written about my personal struggle with weight and fatherhood, this was something that I was not used to,” Roker told People Magazine. “Writing about my marriage was something that I really wasn’t anxious to share.”

Roker eventually agreed to do it, especially because they wrote their sections of the book separately.

“Al worried that we would not do well writing together since we have different styles and was initially not enthusiastic,” Roberts told People. “But, once we landed on the idea of writing alternate chapters and revealing our different points of view, we were both on board.”

Roberts’ section was really personal, as she wrote about the deaths of her childhood best friend and her father. She also writes about being a working mother. Both of their children contributed to the book.

“There is one chapter where not only Deborah and I go back-and-forth, but the kids comment as well. Nick was a little upset that Leila had more lines in that chapter than he did,” Roker said.

3. Roker Describes Their Marriage as ‘Mixed-Weight’

As longtime Today Show viewers know, Roker has struggled with his weight throughout his life. He had gastric bypass surgery after once reaching 340 pounds. He wrote about his struggles in Never Goin’ Back (2013). In a Today.com post, he called his marriage with Roberts a “mixed-weight” marriage.

“My wife is a size 4; she runs, she works out and it became a problem in our marriage,” Roker wrote. “On a Saturday she’d get up, get dressed to run and I’d be sitting on the couch or making breakfast for the kids and was quite happy about our choices. She, on the other hand, was not. Unless you communicate that, it’s going be a problem.”

He continued, “She was upset about it, she was frustrated, she was angry. She thought, ‘Why don’t you care enough about yourself and why don’t you care about me and our relationship enough to change?’ And I said, “Look, it’s not about you. It’s about me.’”

Roker wrote that Roberts has been a runner for 30 years and she was “ticked” off a bit when Roker began running too. “But that’s a good problem to have,” he wrote.

4. Roker Felt Guilty About Roberts Taking a Step Back in Her Career After Leila Was Born

In a Today Show segment earlier this year, Roker said he feels guilty that he was able to stay on the Today Show while his wife’s career was put on hold after Leila was born in 1998.

Roker said that around that time, ABC News offered Roberts a chance to be the newsreader on Good Morning America. She had wanted that job for so long, but she decided to stay home since someone needed to be with Leila in the mornings.

“When we had Leila, it became a difficult point in our marriage because I was already working mornings, and ABC came to her and said, ‘We’d like you to do the newsperson’s job on Good Morning America,’” Roker recalled. “Deborah decided to step back. Her career suffered some for it. You always feel guilty about that.”

“I will admit that deep down in my heart of hearts I have felt at times that I have sacrificed more but I think also he’s also listened to me, too, and tried to feel a little bit of my pain,” Roberts added.

5. The Couple Live in the Upper East Side of New York City & Share a Dog Named Pepper

Roberts, Roker, their two children and dog Pepper live in a brownstone on the Upper East Side. In May 2015, Roker took the Today Show on a tour of his home, particularly in the kitchen.

“It’s the central place in the house,” Al said about the kitchen. “My son does his homework here, my daughter will come home, sit down and talk. We download here.”

While promoting Been There, Done That, the couple let the New York Times follow them on a Sunday. Each Sunday starts with a cup of coffee for Roberts before Roker wakes up.

“We can program our coffee maker the night before but I just like pressing that button. When I hear the coffee percolating, I can start my day,” Roberts said. “I enjoy my coffee, pull up The Times. Then Al comes down.”

Roberts said they don’t have TV in their bedrooms and she tries to stay away from screens before sleeping.

More than anything, the pair focuses on what binds them together, they told TODAY while discussing their book.

“I love the fact that he tries to take things in stride in a very warm and funny way,” Deborah said.

Al said he loves his wife’s empathy.

“She’s a very compassionate person and I think has instilled that in our kids and a lot of it’s rubbed off on me,” he said.

But the couple do have their differences, such as the way they plan work-related trips. Deborah leaves for her trips at the last moment and returns home as soon as possible.

“Al, on the other hand, will leave Sunday before he needs to be there on Monday because he wants to have a nice dinner,” she said. “It just sort of grates on me that he doesn’t feel the guilt that I feel.”

But Al does feel guilt over the sacrifice his wife made shortly after their daughter was born 17 years ago.

“When we had Leila, it became a difficult point in our marriage because I was already working mornings, and ABC came to her and said, ‘We’d like you to do the newsperson’s job on Good Morning America,’” he said.

It was an opportunity Deborah had dreamed and prayed about, but with a newborn baby at home, someone needed to stay home with her in the morning.

“Deborah decided to step back. Her career suffered some for it. You always feel guilty about that,” Al said.

Deborah admitted she felt surprised at how conflicted the decision left her.

“I will admit that deep down in my heart of hearts I have felt at times that I have sacrificed more but I think also he’s also listened to me, too, and tried to feel a little bit of my pain,” she said.

The couple also discussed their occasional differences in parenting, especially when it involves problems their kids are having with friends. Deborah wants to jump in and help her daughter resolve problems, while Al is more hands off.

“I want to invite the friend over for cupcakes and let’s work it out. Al’s approach is, ‘Let them work it out. It’ll be fine. Just leave it alone,’” she said. “So I’m a little bit more involved and hands on and Al is a lot more standoffish when it comes to meddling in their lives.”

But the biggest source of aggravation between the two? Driving.

“When she moved to this city, she was deathly afraid of getting behind the wheel of a vehicle,” Al noted. “Now, our biggest fights are because I’m not aggressive enough behind the wheel.”

Deborah admitted she thinks Al is a tentative driver.

“He won’t zip ahead and take chances,” she said. “He’s driving like a little old lady who’s heading to church.”

Lately, Roker has become notable for more than just his cooking skills. The keto enthusiast publicly criticized celebrity trainer Jillian Michaels for speaking out against the diet. In case you missed it, Michaels told Women’s Health the diet is a bad plan for “a million reasons.”

“Your cells, your macro molecules, are literally made up of protein, fat, carbohydrates, nucleic acids,” she explained. “When you do not eat one of the three macro nutrients — those three things I just mentioned—you’re starving yourselves.

In response, Rorker defended his beloved diet first on Twitter, then in a Today show segment.

“So @JillianMichaels says #Keto is a bad idea. This from a woman who promoted on camera bullying , deprivation, manipulation and more weekly in the name of weight loss. Now those sound like bad ideas,” he tweeted.

On camera, Roker explained his success following a low-carb diet: His cholesterol has improved, his blood pressure is great, and he’s lost weight. But, the TV star admits this lifestyle may not be for everyone.

“My point is, what works for you, works for you,” he said. “There’s science on both sides that says it’s not a great idea and science that says it is a great idea. I think it’s up to people, with their doctor, with their medical professional (to make their own decision).”

No matter what you think of the keto diet, there’s no denying Roker’s recipes look pretty damn good.
