Awarded to the toys our judges picked out as having something particularly special

Moose Toys Kindi Kids, £25

BEST PRESCHOOLER MAGNET: With their wibbly wobbly heads, brightly coloured hair and big glittery eyes, these dolls (there are 4) weren’t initially top of our list – until we saw how enraptured our child judges were with them. They’re a good size (so clothes and shoes are easy to put on and take off) and their ‘interactive’ accessories are fun: we like how the cereal disappears from the spoon when the Donatina doll (pictured) ‘eats’ it.

Available from: Amazon and Very

Wow! Stuff Harry Potter Invisibility Cloak, £60

BEST FOR WOW FACTOR: Yep, this wizarding cloak really does make you invisible (on its app at least). It had our testers properly gasping. It’s super-easy to set up and we like how it comes with a stand for keeping your phone or tablet steady while you film your disappearing acts. Great fun for kids who love making videos.

Available from: Smyths Toys and Argos

furReal Cubby the Curious Bear, £79.99

BEST FOR INTERACTIVE CUDDLES: One of the best interactive toys we’ve seen in a while – and lovely that it’s pitched at younger children. Our child judges loved Cubby’s honey bottle and comb – and how he reacts to them. And we love the amazingly realistic way he pricks up his ears when you speak to him.

Available from: Amazon and Smyths

Great Little Trading Company Seaside Fish & Chip Shop, £55

BEST TRADITIONAL BUY: It’s beautifully made in sturdy painted wood, and it’s nice and compact – meaning, unlike a bigger toy kitchen, it can be carried from room to room (or house to house). And we love that it comes with peas, as well as the fish and chips!

Available from: Great Little Trading Company

Monopoly Voice Banking, £29.99

BEST FOR A MODERN TWIST ON AN OLD FAVOURITE: How clever to add a voice-activated Banker to the classic Monopoly board! All the original elements of the game are still in place except you don’t have loads of paper money lying around (and getting lost). Makes the whole game much more accessible for younger ones.

Available from: Smyths Toys and Argos

Paw Patrol Mighty Pups Jet Command Centre, £60

BEST PESTER-POWER PURCHASE: This is one of those toys that children beg (endlessly) for because it’s based on a hit TV series but this one is a great buy: it’s a nice big size, is super-sturdy, and it lights up, makes noises, transforms (obvs) into a plane and (thrillingly) fires missiles from its disc launcher.

Available from: Amazon and Smyths

Playmobil Tiny Paws Pet Hotel, £40

BEST FOR AMAZING ACCESSORIES: You get so much imaginative play for your money with this one! There are over 55 beautifully detailed accessories, including everything from 8 dogs and a kitchen with tiny opening doors to stretchy dog leads, a kennel, feeding bowls, a doggy seesaw and a string of sausages.

Available from: Amazon and John Lewis

Moose Toys Scruff-a-Luvs, £40

BEST FOR AW! FACTOR: This soft toy melted all our hearts for the way it arrives as a trembly ball of fluff – which gradually calms as you wash and dry and cuddle it, and then transforms into either a dog or cat. Our child judges loved the surprise of finding out which animal they’d ‘rescued’.

Available from: Argos and Smyths

What are the MadeForMums Toy Awards about?

The MadeForMums Toy Awards are all about celebrating the best in children’s toys, from toys for newborns to toys for pre-teens – and all ages, stages and genres in between.

We’re known here at MadeForMums for our expert, honest and thorough product reviews, and we’ve brought those same standards to our Toy Awards – knowing that the award of a winner’s badge from us will be recognised both by parents and major retailers as a sign of outstanding quality and play potential.

How were the toys judged?

We want to recognise the great toys that entertain, educate and excite children of all ages and stages, so we divided all our award entries into 40 different categories, shortlisted the very best of them, and then judged all those on their play potential and value for money.

We also created 8 Editor’s Choice awards – to showcase the toys that our judges thought had something about them that was particularly special.

Who were the judges?

Of course the best people to rate toys are the children who play with them, so we recruited a panel of over 500 child judges, ranging in age from 12 weeks to 15 years, and set them (and their parents) the arduous task of playing with our toy entries and telling us exactly what they thought of them. And they certainly told us EVERYTHING!

We also had several judging days held at MadeForMums HQ, where all the shortlisted toys were tried out by an awesomely influential panel, including:

  • Family YouTube stars The Howarths who make videos about their every day lives and share entertaining videos for people to watch and enjoy.
  • Beau’s Toy Farm, 10-year-old Beau is star of YouTube’s top toy review channel in the UK
  • Kailem and Zizi/Isaiah, Teen YouTube stars, recording a mix of action-packed challenges
  • Creative Celeste British YouTuber who has won legions of fans with her comedy skits, challenges and vlogs
  • Jessica Cunningham and Family, former Apprentice star, mum of 4 Jessica has an active Insta following as theprodigalfox
  • Peter Jenkinson, aka the Toyologist, seen on Philip Schofield’s TV show How to Spend it Well
  • Robert Hutchins, editor of Toy News
  • Campaigners Let Toys be Toys who call for the removal of gender-stereotyping from toys and books marketing
  • Expert members of the MadeForMums editorial team

We’re barely crawling into the month of October, but by this time plenty of people have already started thinking about the holidays.

Amid gathering decor and planning for family gatherings, parents across the nation have started the process of finding and purchasing this year’s hottest gifts. Finding any present might be a straightforward process, but finding the right one can be difficult with dozens of new products surfacing each week.

To help curb the chaos, Parents magazine editor-in-chief, Liz Vaccariello, stopped by TODAY to showcase some of the most coveted toys of the season as listed on the 2019 Best Toys List. Editors (and their kids) tested hundreds of toys in the office and at their homes hoping to find the ones that would stand out among the rest.

After plenty of laughs, occasional packaging issues and days of fun-filled play, they narrowed down the list to a select few products — all of which are likely to fly off the shelves around the holidays.

Check out the best-of-the-best toys of the season that are bound to earn you the title of gift-giving guru.

A great playset for one of the most popular kids’ series

Reasons to buy

+2 things to play with in 1+Realistic lights and sounds+Launches mini jet

This 2-in-1 vehicle is set to be one of the biggest toys this year. Close it up and it’s a big jet vehicle, for flying around with useful carrying handle. Or, open it up to reveal a mobile command centre playset, ready for Paw Patrol figures. There’s more, though: the exclusive Mighty Ryder fits inside a mini jet that you can launch with the push of a button, for rescues in tight quarters. This mini jet also fires discs, whether it’s docked in the large jet or on its own, and the whole thing has light and sound effects. For Paw Patrol fans, it’s a must.

2. Gravitrax Starter Set

Take marble runs to the next level with this engineering set

+Infinite fun through modular design+Learn about engineering and physics+Can build on it in the future

The educational toy maestros at Ravensburger have another hit on their hands with this modular building set, which brings the good old-fashioned fun of creating a marble run bang up to date. Use the hexagonal pieces and track to create a gravity-powered flow with all kinds of twists and turns – plus elements like Y points, free falling, and even a “Magnetic Cannon”. Reasons to avoid

ABCs helps kinds learn the alphabet, practice phonics and expand their vocabulary; Costume Party lets kids mix and match clothing to see characters on-screen react to it; Squiggle Magic lets kids put together weird creation that come to life in the app; and Stories tests lots of different ways of using the app, as kids try to help characters in the stories overcome obstacles.

Best toys 2020 Nerf Fortnite

5. Nerf x Fortnite AR-L Blaster

Two super-popular things, one great toy

+Motorised for serious blasting+Designed to match the game

From the video game to real life, Nerf’s Fortnite blasters are a big hit. There are a bunch of different options, but we like the AR-L here, for its 10-dart magazines with motorised rapid-fire blasting. It comes with 20 darts, so you can load up your magazine ready for a second full round of firing, too. There’s a button to accelerate the motor, so it’s ready to fire at full speed once you get the target in your sights (and there are two flip-up actual sights).

6. Treasure X

Get into the art of excavation

+Surprise reveals are cool+As are pirates

With all the success of ‘surprise package’ opening videos on YouTube, it’s no, uh, surprise that loads of new toy lines are getting in on the trend. This is one of the weirdest, making it simultaneously one of the coolest. Each Treasure X package contains a block of soft rock, that has to be dug through to reveal a surprise figure. Oh, and it’s possible the treasure in the middle might be actual gold.

Best toys 2020 Blume

7. Blume Doll

Grow your own surprise doll

+Weird and clever conceit+Never know what you’ll get

Sticking with the surprise theme, here’s one that’s such a strange idea, but we like the zaniness of it a lot. Each of these dolls comes as a plant pot, and kids will add water. Then, something will grow through the pot’s top – it could be a cake, crystals, fruit… and this is actually the hair of your doll. Once it’s grown, you can open the put to reveal the full doll, which is now ready to play with. The pot acts as a kind of playset, too. There are 22 different Blume Dolls total.

8. Lego Hidden Side Graveyard Mystery

A nice set that turns into a ghost-hunting game once you’ve built it

+A fun spooky set on its own merits+Clever AR game to play after it’s built

Lego’s Hidden Side range is about a group of kids who discover that their town has a serious ghost problem. There’s a range of Hidden Side sets to cover every price, and all have hidden spooky extras built in. Even more importantly, all can be played with in a special AR game on your phone, so there’s loads of ways to play after you’ve finished building. In the game, you’ll bust ghosts and find secrets around the sets, and you’ll even need to physically move parts of the sets to make things happen. We’ve picked this graveyard sets as our favourite because it’s a great mix of price and fun – there are some great touches in the model.

9. Fisher-Price Linkimals Smooth Moves Sloth

Light and sound entertainment for babies 9 months+

+Full of educational and entertaining songs+Easily mesmerises kids

This sloth dances and claps his soft arms to the sound of music, and when babies press the buttons on his body, he’ll play tunes with an educational bent. He’s designed for kids to explore – playing with the lights on his belly, and his grabbable arms. If you have more than one Linkimals toy (they come in other animal designs, but we like the sloth’s design), they’ll all react together, forming a chorus line of entertainment.

Best toys 2020 Sushi Roll

10. Sushi Roll

A fun game of dice rolling and nicking food from other players

+Great game for up to 5+Good mix of strategy and randomness+Super-cute sushi theme

Build the best meal from the dice that come around on the conveyer belt – that’s the premise of the game here. Everyone rolls their own small pool dice with adorable cute-faced sushi dishes on, then chooses a dice to keep to themselves. If you can get the right matching sets of dice, you’ll get big points. However, you don’t get to keep rolling the same dice – every turn, they all get switched between players, so your options getting switched up all the time. But also, if you don’t like your dice, you can use your chopsticks to nick someone else’s, or you can use the menu to reroll them. This is a very light game (suitable to 8+) that has just enough tactics to make you feel proud of winning, but enough randomness that younger kids can do well.

12. LittleBits Avengers Hero Inventor Kit

For the budding Tony Stark or Shuri

+Flexible and expandable electronic system+Encourages creativity in building

LittleBits’ inventor kits are a brilliant way to let kids play with electrical engineering: they have lots of modules that just magnetically click together to build complex circuits, with lots of different input and output options, such as sensors or light and speaker books. This Marvel-themed set ways to build wearable tech that evokes Iron Man or The Wasp, and it’s all programmable from the accompanying app, so you can make the LED light matrix do whatever you like. As a fun finish, the set encourages you to build the the actual casing out of household items in a very Blue Peter fashion.

13. Rhino Hero – Super Battle

Because animal superheroes are the best superheroes

+Massive fun for kids or adults+Big play from a fairly small box

Like a mixture of reverse Jenga and buckaroo, in this game you build a skyscraper by placing your cards down as ‘floors’ and building walls from L-shaped cards, which is not exactly the most stable structure, and you really don’t want it to fall. But things get even more tense, because you each have a little wooden animal superhero, all of whom want to take their place as high up the tower as possible, defending it… which makes it more unbalanced. Oh, and there are evil spider-monkey blocks that hang off the edges of cards. The tension rollercoaster of delicately placing your cards successfully, then realising you still need to move a hero block risking a whole new chance for disaster, is brilliant.

14. Scratch Magic Note Cubes

Who doesn’t love a bit of rainbow doodling?

+Great stocking filler+Easy to play with this different art style

This like a block of Post-Its, but instead of writing on them with ink, you actually scratch away the surface, revealing the rainbow pattern underneath. 15. Candylocks BFF 2-Pack

+Hidden doll fun+Special hair texture makes it easy to style+Scented!

The draw for these dolls is their giant, easy-to-style hair. It’s got a soft texture (“cotton candy” they call it) that means it holds its shape after you’ve gotten it just how you like. This set comes with extra accessories you can use to style the hair, including hair chalk for adding some extra colour. These are also surprise dolls, too – in the packet, you can see the big hair, but you’ll have to unwrap the dolls once you open it all up.

16. Fingerlings Untamed Raptor

A baby dinosaur on your finger that you can tame

+Dinosaurs are the best+Reacts to touch

Every kid wants a dinosaur as a pet, right? The Fingerlings Untamed Raptor grips your finger, but has a wild temperament, growing and snapping its jaws at you when touched. But, if you brave stroking its head, it will those not into ancient lizards.

17. Lego Star Wars Boost Droid Commander

Control your own R2-D2 and take him through missions

+Build three different Star Wars droids+Learn about programming+Build extensions for the droids

This set builds three iconic Lego droids (though, we’ll admit that R2 is somewhat ahead in the ‘iconic’ leagues), which you can then control through a story-based app on your phone that teaches programming. You’ll take these droids through events of the Star Wars story, controlling them using a simple system of (appropriately) blocks – drag in what movement or other actions you want them to do, and then later add in proper computer logic for more advanced automation.

18. Nerf Laser Ops Pro

Battle to the digital death with app-connected lasers

+Play laser quest anywhere+Double set makes it easy to get started

Breaking away from Nerf’s traditional foam projectiles, the Laser Ops funs shoot infrared light, aiming to hit sensors and register killer shots. And if you want more people to play, you can add more guns, and divide into teams using the app.

19. Orangutwang

Silly and tense fun for kids

+Fun jungle theme+Great value

Like a tropical spin on Buckaroo, this is a game of trying to load as much fruit and other jungle creatures onto the orangutan hanging on a wire as possible before he twangs, flinging himself and the other objects into the air. There are no batteries required – it’s all just good ol’ fashioned physics. It’s silly, it’s suspenseful, it’s surprising – everyone will love it.

20. Hot Wheels Drone Racerz Bladez Vehicle Set

The famous mini cars take to the sky (and still do stunt driving)

+Flying fun+Stunt spectacular

The Best Play Kitchens For Your Little Chefs

The kitchen is generally the heart of the home. For young kids, play kitchens are often the heart of the play room. Toys like kids’ kitchen sets encourage children to engage in collaborative play, which is a key part of socialization because it’s how they learn to share and work with others.

“The most important feature of a toy is that it be open ended and provide opportunities for exploration,” says Dr. Keith Sawyer, an education professor at the University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill who studies creativity and learning.

A toy kitchen does just that. Plus, it can help kids get comfortable around unfamiliar food, and experiment, in a safe way, with foods they haven’t tried before. They’re also play-therapist approved, as toys that mimic real life allow kids to be more a part of the grown-up world.

When you’re looking for a great toddler play kitchen, find one that won’t take you a year, and an advanced degree in architecture, to put together. These are our picks.

The Interactive Play Kitchen You’re Kids Will Love!

Since my kids were about one years old, they love to help me cook and bake in the kitchen. Adding ingredients and giving it a stir, it’s their favorite part of the day! I always wished there was a way they could have fun pretending to make their own things while learning at the same time. Letting kids help you cook is such a great, fun way to help their little minds grow. Eating healthy is also an important part of cooking and when they learn young, they tend to stick to healthy foods as they get older.

Little Tikes Cook n’ Learn Smart Kitchen is such a fun, interactive way for kids to explore the kitchen. Since technology is a large part of interaction and learning for kids, I love a good educational app that my kids will have fun with. Download the free app on your tablet, latch it to the kitchen and let the fun begin!

About The Cook n’ Learn Kitchen

The Cook ‘n Learn Smart Kitchen has an engaging and unique play experience that kids will love! The kitchen has interactive accessories that come alive with the integrated App that is downloaded to your tablet with iOS7 and above or 4.3 or higher Android mobile device.

  • Kids will enjoy the realistic play features
  • Kitchen has sizzling and cooking sounds
  • Kids can “cut” the fruits and veggies to make a meal
  • Oven light goes on when the door is opened
  • Kids can “grow” fruits and veggies in the kitchen pots
  • The interactive kitchen App includes 4 modes of play

I never thought a play kitchen could be this awesome! The features are amazing, my preschool aged toddlers absolutely love playing with it. Cook n’ Learn Smart Kitchen is truly a smart toy. My son loves to do the recipes that he can follow along with. It shows him step by step what to do for the recipes. As he completes a step, such as putting the “pot on the stove”, he’s cheered on to the next step. Once he’s done with the recipe, he gets a digital sticker to choose from and eventually a trophy!

Most noteworthy to me is that is can recognize what they are playing with, with it’s smart bluetooth technology. My kids are amazed that it knows what they’re doing. From pretending to run the facet in the play sink, in addition to “chopping” a fruit or vegetable. The Smart Kitchen is right there guiding them to fun and learning!
