Gluten free meal replacement bars

I’ve never been much of a breakfast person. But I generally need to eat something every 2-3 hours in order to stay alert and sane and grumpy-face-free. So I’ve consumed my fair share of breakfast bars over the years, especially since becoming gluten-free.

When you have an allergy, grabbing snacks on the go is not always a reliable option. Ever since Chef Race when I almost died of starvation, not just on the challenges but during the pit stops in the white bread capitals of the world in between, I tend to carry at least 2 bars in my purse at all times. My suitcase on that trip was 25 percent Kind Bars.

Larabar kind of remade the marketplace when their fruit and nut forward bars took off 5 years ago. Since then, Luna and Cliff have had to make way for many healthy rivals that not only tout energy and protein, but all-around nutrients. This summer I’ve been trying to eat as cleanly as possible, which has meant a lot of label reading and avoiding of frequent gluten-free fillers like soy and sugar. I wanted to share with you some of my favorites, why they rock, and what to beware of if you have other dietary concerns.
1. The Pure Bar

These bars may not be as ubiquitous as some of the other brands, but in terms of overall quality of ingredients and taste, they are one of my favorites. Any brand that uses all organic ingredients is one that I’m going to give my business to. The blueberry flavor in particular is great and kind of reminds me of the not-so-healthful nutri-grain bars of my childhood.

2. Health Warrior Chia Bars

These seeds seem to be popping up everywhere now that they’ve emerged as the latest cool superfood. These bars are tiny and won’t do much for you in the way of a meal, but they are a great way to integrate chia into your diet throughout the day (I find the Chia Seed drinks a little goopy and weird). Be warned however: chia seeds expand when they come into contact with liquid, and I found that this process was the perfect storm for the crevices in between my teeth.

3. Kind Bars

Even with all the other options on the market, I still buy boxes of these guys to keep in my cupboards. They tend to be on the sweeter side, so if you’re watching your sugar intake, they might not be the best option for you. But the original fruit and nut bars are fairly pure and healthful. Dark Chocolate and Peanuts, maybe not as much. They aren’t organic but are non-GMO, which is what matters in my book.
4. GoMacro Macrobars

These bars are probably the most healthful on the list. But unfortunately, you can taste it. The flavor I enjoyed most was “balanced goodness” with granola and coconut. Regardless, if you’re looking for something organic to have on hand to keep you healthy and from getting hungry, this is a good one to choose.
5. Larabar

This is the original healthy fruit and nut bar. I love the creative flavors and the bang-for-your-buck texture. There’s a lot packed into one of these little bars. I’ve seen some great recipes online for DIY larabars, so they might be worth exploring at home if you find yourself spending half your salary on bars.

6. ThinkThin

The main goal of these bars is to offer a low sugar option, which is a great niche to inhabit since so many of these healthful bar options do contain a lot of sugar. They also taste great. Flavors like brownie and peanut butter are more akin to old school energy bars in texture, while the chocolate covered nut bars have that nice crunch. My one reservation about these bars is that they contain a lot of filler ingredients, the most notable of which is soy. Because of this, I don’t eat them anymore. But if you don’t watch your soy intake, give them a try.

6 Healthiest and Tastiest Gluten-Free Protein Bars

Snack bars could be a wonderful on-the-go food. Unfortunately, nearly every snack bar out there is filled with additives, GMOs, and other questionable ingredients. Instead of adding healthy protein to help your body revitalize, and build new muscle, you may be damaging it instead. Not to mention even if you do find a decent snack bar and you happen to have a gluten sensitivity, you still aren’t able to enjoy it.

After a month of research and taste tests, we only found a few protein bars that fit the bill of being healthy and tasty. While not perfect, these snack bars beat 99% of the protein/snack bar market. The ingredients are super easy to understand, short and healthy. The bars taste completely different from any snack bar you have tasted, but in a fantastic way. You can taste the raw ingredients in the majority of these and once you try them out, there’s hardly any going back to their heavily processed and unhealthy counterparts. Here are 6 of the healthiest gluten-free and vegan protein bars out there in no particular order.

1. Organic Peanut Protein Bar by MACROBARS

We love the Macrobars because of their simplicity of their recipes. This protein bar packs a whopping 12 grams of protein and it all comes from brown rice. While we do have concerns about brown rice, if your diet does not include brown rice daily, this may still be a great replacement for typical protein bars. They taste fantastic, pack the highest protein content out of all the bars we tested and they’re gluten-free.

Our favorite flavor was peanut butter. It’s very chewy. The peanut butter taste blended with the rest of the bar, not overwhelming it, and surprisingly it was not overly sweet.

Organic Brown Rice Syrup, Organic Peanut Butter, Organic Protein Blend (Organic Brown Rice Protein, Organic Pea Protein), Organic Puffed Brown Rice, Organic Peanuts.

2. Ancient Grain Bar, Peanut Butter Chocolate by Pure Organic

The Pure Organic bars are one of the few companies that provide healthy snack bars that are kosher as well. The ingredient list is a bit longer than the other few bars, but the ingredients are still great. We don’t like the agave nectar, but besides that, this is probably our second favorite on the list. However, when it comes to fitness, 5 grams of protein may not be enough. But if you are simply looking for something to snack on from the gym to your house, then it may just be perfect.

Our favorite flavor was peanut butter (again!). If you enjoy something that’s chewy and a bit firmer, Pure bars have that kind of texture. They pack a bit of a crunch and you can really taste the smooth peanut butter and cocoa combination in this one. No unwanted aftertaste or too much sweetness. However, the rest of the flavors we tested were a bit too sweet that’s why we are giving it a 4.

3. Spirulina Dream Protein Bar by Raw Revolution

Besides the agave nectar, the ingredients in the Raw Revolution bars are great, it packs 7 grams of protein and it’s almost twice as cheap as other counterparts of the same quality. That’s why this combination of price and quality is so hard to beat. We love the Spirulina Dream flavor but they do offer a huge variety of other fantastic flavors as well. However, do keep in mind that these contain 15+ grams of sugar per bar.

What you have to understand about Raw Revolution bars is that they are actually almost completely raw. If you loved eating raw cookie dough as a child, that’s how it almost feels. Except this is packed with fantastic ingredients that we all love. It’s exclusively chewy and smooth.

4. Caramel & Sea Salt Glo Protein Bars by Raw Rev

This is a new line of protein bars from Raw Revolution. They do contain a lot more ingredients than the rest of the bars on our list, but they are all great quality ingredients. Somehow they were able to make a protein bar that is healthy, affordable and packing 10 grams of protein while containing only 5 grams of sugar. This combination of many various ingredients may seem questionable, but they blend together phenomenally.

None of us on the taste team were caramel + salt fans, to begin with, but by the end, this was one of our favorite tasting bars. The bar appears a bit oily and chewy at first, but once the crunchiness of the nuts and salt sets in, we are in the first row of a train going to tasty land.

Ingredients: Raw Rev Nutty Superfood Blend (Raw Cashews, Peanuts, Pea Protein, Organic Brown Rice Protein, Raw Almonds, Raw Organic Hemp Protein, Raw Organic Chia Seeds, Raw Organic Virgin Coconut Oil, Raw Organic Sprouted Flax Seeds), Isomalto-Oligosaccharides (Prebiotic Fiber from Tapioca), Organic Italian Dark Chocolate Chips (Cane Sugar, Chocolate Liquor, Cocoa Butter, Soy Lecithin, Vanilla Extract), Organic Brown Rice Syrup, Pea Protein Crisps, Natural Flavors, Sea Salt.

5. Apple Cinnamon Cricket Flour Bars by Exo

Before you freak out or discount these completely, consider the fact that they are actually very good! Additionally, raising crickets is much more sustainable as they use about 20x fewer resources than raising cattle does! 80% of the world eats insects, yet our culture has not accepted them yet. They pack 10 grams of protein as well. The only down side is that they contain a lot of sugar at 16 grams.

So we tricked our team a bit by not telling them what these were made out of up front. Initial consensus was that they tasted quite well although the bar tasted a bit powdery. However, after revealing that these were actually the cricket bars, everyone started questioning the taste a bit more. Overall, it was a normal reaction to something new and unusual. We highly recommend that you try out at least a few of these. While it was not our favorite tasting bar, it was definitely something that you can eat every day. They are a bit on the sweet side, and the apple taste dominates the bar, while there is no noticeable taste of crickets. Knowing there is another source of sustainable and healthy food is great news.

6. Chocolate Protein Bar by Raw Crunch

Raw Crunch was a company that we have not heard of prior to doing some research in finding the healthiest bars. We’re sure glad we found them. They make fantastic raw bars that are not processed and handmade. They taste exactly what a snack bar should taste like and they pack 5 grams of protein, while only containing 5 grams of sugar. However, they are the most expensive bar that we tested.

If you love trail mix bars, there’s absolutely no reason why you won’t love the taste of this. It’s very crunchy (although sometimes a bit jaw-tiring) and the taste of dark chocolate chips in between is heavenly. This is certainly one of the best tasting bars on the list.

Price Per Bar: $$$$ (check price)

Protein Content: 5 grams

Ingredients: Organic Sesame Seeds, Organic Sunflower Seeds, Organic Pumpkin Seeds, Organic Cashews, *Organic Dark Chocolate (organic sugar, organic unsweetened chocolate, organic cocoa butter, organic vanilla beans, soy lecithin), Organic Flaxseeds, Organic Pecans, Raw Honey, Organic Macadamia Nuts, Celtic Sea Salt.

Honorable Mentions

Active Greens Protein Bar by Raw Organic Food Bar

We love the ingredients as they are simple and easy to understand and it outperforms the rest of the snack bars that we took a look at. A whopping 16 grams of protein is inside every one of these. We don’t recommend eating the whole thing at once, as it packs 16 grams of sugar and it’s the most expensive bar on the list at $3.59 per bar.

Taste: Unfortunately, we did not receive any samples to taste.

Almond Honey Protein Bar by Rise

We absolutely love that the Rise bar contains only a few ingredients. While we’d love for the honey to be raw or organic, and instead of the whey protein isolate (quick lesson: milk -> filter -> whey protein concentrate -> whey protein isolate) we would love to see hemp protein, it’s still a great choice. Well, that is, if for some reason you can’t get the other four. It’s still gluten-free, it provides the highest amount of protein and it absorbs quickly after the workout. It is probably one of the purest whey protein bars out there.

Taste: Unfortunately, we did not receive any samples to taste.

Freeland Go Raw Bars

Another great option if you love the granola and trail mix type of bars. However, what’s special about these is that they don’t contain any nuts. So for those with peanut allergies, hooray! Instead, they contain a great mix of oats, seeds, and dates.

Taste: Unfortunately, we did not receive any samples to taste.

According to Snack Food & Wholesale Bakery magazine, nearly half of bar sales come from three companies—KIND, Clif and Atkins (all varieties of KIND, LUNA from Clif and Atkins’ Harvest Trail bar are gluten-free). But there are hundreds of brands that account for the rest of consumer spending, and many are also gluten-free.

Food Bar Basics

Are you confused by all the different types of bars, whether protein bars, high-protein bars, snack bars, granola bars, meal replacement bars, energy bars, pre-workout bars, post-workout bars or low-sugar bars?

Unfortunately, there’s no industry standard for defining what each of these means. Our advice? Look at the ingredients to see what’s best for your needs. Opt for high fiber and high protein if you want to keep full and for lower sugar to prevent spikes in your blood sugar. Always look out for allergens like peanuts, tree nuts, soy, eggs and dairy—all prevalent in gluten-free bars.

Protein Bars, Meal Replacement Bars, and Energy Bars

Check the protein source to see if it fits your dietary needs. Does it come from soy protein, whey protein, pea protein, egg whites, nuts or another source? Are you trying to get more protein than a typical meal? If so, you might want an ultra-high protein bar with 20 grams of protein. Are you replacing a meal, like a hamburger patty, that would normally contain 10 grams of protein? If so, you might not need an ultra-high protein bar.

Snack Bars

If you’re eating bars just for a snack (not for meal replacement), take a good look at their protein and sugar content. Some snack bars are loaded with chocolate and dried fruit and they have more sugar than a candy bar. For a more satiating snack, look for nut-based bars (if tolerated) rather than grain-based bars.

Granola Bars

These bars tend to be grain-based, often containing oats. Look for bars that are certified gluten-free or that contain certified gluten-free oats. Many granola bars go beyond oats—they might contain nuts, seeds or dried fruit in a variety of flavors.

Low-Sugar Bars

Sugar can come in different forms, such as added sugar, like cane sugar or tapioca syrup, or naturally occurring sugar from dried fruit like dates. Some bars have zero-calorie sugar alcohols, such as maltitol or sorbitol. If you’re looking for an easy way to reduce your sugar intake, opt for bars without added chocolate chips or chocolate drizzle.

Trends in the Food Bar Market

We’ve been walking trade shows like the Winter Fancy Foods Show and Natural Products Expo West to pick up on the latest trends in gluten-free nutritional bars. Here’s what’s trending.

▶ Bars with Benefits: Many bars contain added ingredients for extra nutritional benefits. Some of these functional bars have ingredients that address specific aspects of health. Top trends are bars that add antioxidants, superfoods, hidden veggies or adaptogenic herbs such as ginseng, said to help your body’s response to stress, or ashwagandha, an Ayurvedic ingredient said to combat anxiety and depression.

▶ Paleo: Grain-free or paleo bars continue to be popular. These bars have ingredients like nuts, seeds and dried fruit. Some paleo-friendly bars contain dark chocolate.

▶ Bite Size: While we’re talking about bars, we can’t miss bars’ other half—the bites. These snackable bites are typically high in protein and full of “clean” ingredients (without a lot of unnecessary filler ingredients).

Protein Bars

Many readers tell us that they’re looking for high-protein bars—bars that can keep them fuller longer or address nutritional deficiencies. These are often touted as “meal replacement” bars. Some contain 20 grams (or more) of protein in one bar.

Sometimes, high protein can make a bar less palatable. But it doesn’t always mean bad taste. Added protein can come in many forms. Plant protein might be from pea, hemp, sunflower, brown rice or soy. Animal protein can come from whey, egg whites, collagen and even crickets!

Each protein has a unique taste and texture, so try a few. If nuts are tolerated, try a nut-based bar that gets its protein content from peanuts or tree nuts instead of a manufactured protein powder or isolate.

The Sugar Content in Snack Bars

Over half of our readers surveyed want a bar that is low in sugar. But some snack bars contain more sugar and calories than a candy bar! Recently, we were eating a bar and noticed that it contained 26 grams of sugar—that’s more than an Almond Joy (20 grams) or a package of Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups (22 grams).

Sweetness can come from added sugars like cane sugar or agave syrup or from natural sources like dates. For those with sensitive stomachs (like us), be careful of added sweeteners like xylitol, sorbitol, stevia and monk fruit. These may cause digestive distress for some.

Always be sure to check the serving size on the label. Look out for tricky packages that show more than one serving per bar—you may end up eating more calories, sugar and fat than you’d like.

Taste is the Most Important Review Factor

It’s no surprise that readers are looking for bars that taste good. Over 75% want their bars to taste great. (Quite frankly, we don’t know why it isn’t 100%!) However, as we gluten-free folks know, sometimes you have to compromise on taste to get what you want, such as grain-free or nut-free bars that have more protein and less sugar.

Certified Safe for Celiacs

More than 85% of our readers want a bar that is certified gluten-free. However, many of their favorite bars are not certified gluten-free. These bars may be labeled gluten-free but they don’t have third-party certifications.

The FDA requires that any product labeled gluten-free contains less than 20 ppm of gluten. Gluten-free certifications may require that the product test less than that—typically 10 ppm of gluten or lower. Certification also means that there is third-party oversight of the manufacturer’s gluten-free processes and ingredients.

Where to Buy GF Snack Bars

Natural grocery stores like Whole Foods Market, Natural Grocers and Sprouts are the best places to find a huge selection of gluten-free bars. While only 13% of our readers shop online for bars, don’t overlook websites like Amazon and Thrive Market, which offer a wide variety of bars, often at a discount.

Do-It-Yourself Granola Bars

Can’t find what you’re looking for? Make it yourself! Only a quarter of our readers have tried to make their own snack bars. Most say that they don’t have enough time or that homemade is too difficult.

Don’t fret. We promise that it’s easy to make snack bars from scratch. Turn to “Healthy Homemade Bars” for delicious recipes from Gluten Free & More’s food editor Beth Hillson. They’re quick to put together and easy on your wallet.

For a semi-homemade option, try a protein bar mix. Creation Nation recently launched a line of certified gluten-free mixes. Just add your own liquid, nut butter or oil, and sweetener to taste.

Readers’ Favorite GF Snack Bars

We asked our readers about their favorite bars. Most of these bars are not certified gluten-free, but the companies that make them have good manufacturing processes in place to test for gluten. We polled the Gluten Free & More team and everyone agreed with our readers’ favorites.

Here’s a closer look at some of our readers’ favorite brands of gluten-free bar. See our chart for nutritional details and for GF&M’s reviews of other great gluten-free bars.

thinkThin bars come in a variety of decadent flavors like Cookies and Creme, White Chocolate, Caramel Fudge and our favorite, Creamy Peanut Butter. The different varieties of thinkThin bars are high in protein with no refined sugar; they’re sweetened with maltitol. Most contain dairy. Homemade Dark Chocolate Sea Salt KIND Nut Bars (V, GF, DF): a protein-rich recipe for homemade KIND bars drizzled in dark chocolate and sprinkled with sea salt. Vegan, Gluten Free, Dairy-Free, Protein-Packed.

Dark Chocolate and Sea Salt. Otherwise known as… the BEST flavor combo ever. Like, EVER.

So remember when I said I had plans for my basic 5 Ingredient Homemade KIND Nut Bars? Remember when I said it’d be… GOOD? And tasty? And saucy? And All the Things? Okay, maybe I didn’t say that because I didn’t want to spoil the surprise. But you know what I mean!

And does the combo of dark chocolate and sea salt equal “saucy?” I think it does.

Well, here ya go. 😉 Allow me to present to you my Homemade Dark Chocolate Sea Salt KIND Nut Bars.

Quick show of hands, who here is a HUGE fan of the dark chocolate + sea salt combo?

Okay, fine, I can’t really see you raise your hands, as this is the internet… but I can feel your excitement due to my vivid imagination. Go imagination!!

Alright, it’s starting to sound a bit desperate and lonely up in here. Moving on…

If you’ve been around BB for long enough, you know that healthy homemade snacks that actually taste like candy/dessert awesomeness is a BIG thing around here. Like, a really. Big. Thing. Let’s just say that I spend my days and nights thinking of excuses/ways/recipes to allow us hard-working, sweet tooth (like, woah), folks ways to enjoy what we love in the afternoon, in the morn, and for sure, after the gym. Oh. YES.

I mean, have you tried my no bake Peanut Butter Cup Oatmeal Bars? <— They seriously taste like peanut butter cups and granola bars got together and made sweet, sweet, kitchen creations. Let’s keep it family-friendly here, folks. 😉 The combo of velvety peanut butter and chocolate layered atop a thick, dense, chewy foundation of satisfying peanut butter bars… it’s just beyond.

Or, have you tried my 4 ingredient No Bake Peanut Butter Coconut Oatmeal Cookies? These cookies are one of my absolute favorites. They’re so easy to make, they remind me of an old, old favorite: honey-roasted peanuts, and they’re the perfect chewy combo of peanut butter, oats and coconut. Admit it, you’re drooling right now. And guess what?

You can eat them for breakfast and totally get away with it.

Or, or, have you tried my no bake Cherry Chocolate Chip Chia Energy Bites? They taste like chocolate cherry pie. But in poppable, portable and potent (alright, I was desperately looking for another “p”)… uh, protein-rich (bingo) form! If you like cherries and LOVE chocolate, these little bites of dessert protein are for you.

And don’t even get me started on my Almond Butter Cookie Dough Granola Bars, No Bake Chocolate Peanut Butter Oatmeal Cookie Dough Bars, Double Chocolate Banana Muffins, or my Peanut Butter Chocolate Chip Oatmeal Breakfast Bars.

They ALL. Taste. Like. Dessert.

But you can eat them for breakfast.

Because that’s how we roll here. ..

See what I mean? Dessert-level snacks are kind of my thing. And they’re kind of our thing, don’t you think? 🙂

Anywho, I get requests all the time for more candied nut recipes and more granola bar recipes… so I figured it was time to once again mashup the two in the most delicious way possible. These Homemade Dark Chocolate Sea Salt KIND Nut Bars taste like your favorite skillet-roasted, warm, cozy candied nuts… but coated in velvety, smooth, dark chocolate—your favorite kind of course. Then, lightly or generously (depending on how you like it) sprinkled with perfectly coarse gems of sea salt.

Tell me you can seriously resist the sound of that. Come on.

Best thing about these homemade dark chocolate sea salt KIND nut bars? They’re made with just 1/4 cup of pure maple syrup for the entire batch. Yep, the ENTIRE batch. That’s 12 bars worth. In case you’re still not convinced, allow me to tell you all about these Homemade Dark Chocolate Sea Salt KIND Nut Bars. They’re:

  • made with just 7 ingredients
  • SO much fun to dip and drizzle
  • vegan, gluten-free, dairy-free
  • scrumptiously salty and sweet
  • crunchy, chewy, satisfying
  • deliciously protein-packed
  • plant-based and allergy-friendly
  • perfect for dessert or a snack
  • made with the simple, healthy whole ingredients you love
  • all of your nutty chocolate dreams come true
  • (like, who doesn’t have those?)
  • one of my favorite desserts. I mean snacks. I mean dessert. ..

So whaddya think? Are you ready to get your homemade KIND bar on? Let’s SO do this! You’ve got to tell me how you like dipping and drizzling these guys. Erik and I had waaaaaay too much fun during the dreamy melting chocolate stage. Let’s just say we may or may not have “accidentally” made a chocolate mess, which we had to “clean up” by eating. Yes, by eating…it ALL! I can’t wait to hear what you think of this recipe! In the meantime, tell me…

What dessert-inspired snack would you like to see next on Beaming Baker?

Homemade Dark Chocolate Sea Salt KIND Nut Bars (V, GF, DF): a protein-rich recipe for homemade KIND bars drizzled in dark chocolate and sprinkled with sea salt. Vegan, Gluten Free, Dairy-Free, Protein-Packed.

Scale 1x2x3x

  • 1 cup almonds
  • ½ cup peanuts
  • ½ cup vegan gluten free brown rice crisp cereal
  • ¼ teaspoon sea salt
  • ¼ cup pure maple syrup

Chocolate Coating

  • 1/3 cup vegan chocolate chips
  • ½ teaspoon coconut oil

Chocolate Drizzle

  • 3 tablespoons vegan chocolate chips
  • ¼ teaspoon coconut oil

  • sea salt for topping

  1. Preheat oven to 325°F. Line an 8-inch square baking pan with parchment paper. Set aside.
  2. Make the bars: Add almonds, peanuts, cereal and salt to a large bowl. Stir until well mixed. Pour maple syrup over this mixture. Fold until well incorporated.
  3. Pour this mixture into the prepared baking pan. Using a rubber spatula, smooth into a tightly packed, even layer. Bake for 30-40 minutes (mine took 35 mins). Bars must bake thoroughly, or they won’t hold together when cooled.
  4. Allow to cool for 1 hour, or until completely cooled. Use a heatproof spatula to gently lift and loosen bars from parchment. Slice into 12 bars (6 rows by 2 columns).
  5. Line a large baking sheet with parchment paper or wax paper. Clear some room in the freezer for this sheet–you will need it later. Set the sheet on a clear work area.
  6. Dip the bars: Melt the chocolate using the double boiler method, or doing the following. Add Chocolate Coating ingredients to a medium microwave-safe bowl (large enough to dip bars in). Heat in the microwave in 15-second increments until softened and melted. Stir in between heating, until smooth.
  7. Dip the bottom of one bar into the melted chocolate, scraping off excess on the side of the bowl. There should be enough chocolate for a thin layer on each bar. Place on the prepared baking sheet. Repeat, spacing each bar evenly apart, until all bars are dipped.
  8. Drizzle the bars: Add Chocolate Drizzle ingredients to a clean, microwave-safe bowl. Repeat heating instructions, until chocolate is smooth. Spoon melted chocolate into a zip bag with a tiny corner snipped off. Drizzle each bar in a zigzag pattern. Sprinkle sea salt over bars.
  9. Place bars carefully into the freezer. Freeze for 10-20 minutes, or until chocolate is completely hardened. Enjoy! Storing instructions below.

– Adapted from my 5 Ingredient Homemade KIND Nut Bars (V, GF, DF).
– Storing instructions: for the first day, store in an airtight container in the refrigerator. After the first day in the fridge, you may store them at room temperature in a cool, dark environment for up to 1 month.
– More easy homemade snacks (all V, GF, DF): peanut butter cup oatmeal bars, cherry chocolate chip chia energy bites, peanut butter cookie energy bars, cranberry almond butter breakfast bars.

Fiber Bars

Frequently Asked Questions

What are the key attributes of a Truth Bar?

Truth Bars are functional nutrition bars with many key attributes. They were the first bars with both prebiotics and probiotics; they are high in fiber (13-14g); low in sugar (4-5g); contain a full day’s supply of Omega-3 from white chia seed (250mg); and are made from natural, real food ingredients with no fillers. They are gluten-free, kosher, non-GMO, soy-free and all 200 calories or less. Truth Bars contain premium, mostly organic ingredients such as organic extra virgin coconut in our coconut bars. Truth Bars come in both Vegan and Non-Vegan varieties. Best of all, Truth Bars continue to receive mostly five stars for great taste!

Questions About Prebiotics and Probiotics:

What is a probiotic?

Probiotics are good bacteria in your digestive system that help to keep your gut healthy and that make a beneficial contribution to your overall health.

What is a prebiotic?

Prebiotics are indigestible fibers that come mainly from certain plant foods that feed the good bacteria in your gut.

Why is it important to have both prebiotics and probiotics together?

Prebiotics feed the probiotics to help them thrive and work longer in your body. When combining a nurturing base of prebiotics in the belly, with a good dose of probiotics, a garden of flora blossoms and fills the gut with a balanced, healthy microbiome.

How much probiotic is in each Truth Bar?

1 Billion CFU’s.

What is the strain of probiotic used in Truth Bars?

Lactobacillus sporogenes (bacillus coagulans). It is a stable Lactic Acid forming probiotic that has extensive studies of gut healing effects ranging across gastrointestinal issues, bloating, diarrhea and irritable bowel syndrome. This spore-producing bacteria remains dormant in the package and on grocery store shelves, but becomes activated once eaten. This hardy bacteria strain has a protective shell that helps it survive the acid and bile in your stomach so that it can reach your intestines unharmed. Once there, the low ph and moisture in your intestines allows it to activate and multiply rapidly. This is especially true when it has prebiotics there to feed it.

Questions about ingredients:

How are Truth Bars sweetened?

In order to achieve a balance between sweetness and low sugar, Truth Bars are sweetened by a combination of natural sweeteners and real food ingredients.

How many grams of sugar do Truth Bars have?

The number of grams of sugar ranges from 4 grams per bar in the Chocolate Peanut Butter Crunch Bar to 5 grams per bar in the rest of the Truth Bar flavors.

Are Truth Bars Made With All-Natural Ingredients?

Yes. Truth Bars are made with 100% all-natural ingredients and contain no artificial flavors, no artificial colors, no artificial sweeteners, and no fillers. Truth Bar ingredients are also non-GMO.

Are Truth Bars Vegan?

Two Truth Bar flavors are vegan. Our Dark Chocolate Coconut and Chocolate Raspberry Coconut bars are both 100% Vegan. They’re both rich in fiber and essential medium chain fatty acids that are easily digested, which makes them incredibly useful for a quick burst of energy.

Three of our Truth Bars are protein based (10g per bar) and non-vegan. Our Chocolate Almond Crunch, Mint Chocolate Chip and Chocolate Peanut Butter Crunch bars feature a Non-Vegan blend of brown rice protein, whey protein isolate and whey protein concentrate that supplies essential Amino Acids for a “complete” or “whole” source of protein.

Are Truth Bars 100% gluten free?

Yes. All Truth Bars are 100% gluten free.

Are Truth Bars soy free?

Yes. Though often found in chocolate, the specially formulated dark chocolate coating on all Truth Bars is completely free of soy. (the chocolate coating itself is also sugar free)

Are Truth Bars dairy and lactose free?

Truth Bar’s vegan bars (Dark Chocolate Coconut and Chocolate Raspberry Coconut) are dairy and lactose free. Truth Bar’s protein bars contain both Whey Protein Isolate and Whey Protein Concentrate. These whey proteins contain a small percentage of lactose.

What about other allergens?

If you have allergies, please read the food ingredients on the label carefully or talk to your nutritionist, allergist, or doctor about what is best for you. Also note that though not every Truth Bar contains these ingredients, they are made on equipment shared with peanuts, tree nuts, soy and dairy.

Are Truth Bars kosher?

Yes. They are certified OU Kosher by the Orthodox Union.

What is the source of Omega-3’s?

Truth Bars contain Omega-3s from white chia seed.

Do Truth Bars contain MCT (medium chain triglyceride) Oil?

Where can I find nutrition information?

Each bar’s nutrition facts can also be found on the product pages on truthbar.com. Just click the third tab.

You can also find information on the ingredient page on truthbar.com that outlines key ingredients and their benefits.

Truth Bars & Popular Diets:

Are Truth Bars Keto Friendly?

Keto diets are very low in carbs, high in fat, ideally higher in fiber, and have some balanced amount of protein. The strictest Keto diets require very low to almost no carbs. Truth Bars would not be ideal for the strictest keto diet. But if you are looking for a snack option for a basic or moderate keto diet, Truth Bar’s Chocolate Peanut Butter Crunch bar is a great choice — high in fiber (13g), high in healthy fat (12g), moderate protein (10g) and relatively lower net carbs (6g).

How many Weight Watchers points does a Truth Bar have?

Truth Bars have approximately 8-9 points per bar.

Are Truth Bars Paleo Friendly?

Paleo diets in their strictest form include foods that hunter-gatherers would have eaten. This means no foods that were not available to them (like sugar, processed foods, artificial ingredients) and lots of fruits, grains and lean protein. Paleo diets also restrict grains, legumes and dairy. Truth Bars, while gluten-free and only containing real food ingredients, would not fit in the Paleo diet in its strictest form as they contain some sugar (4-5g).

Other Questions:

What is the shelf life of Truth Bars?

Truth Bars have a shelf life of 12 months from the date of production. We make our bars in small batches, which should ensure that our retailer’s shelves are stocked with fresh bars when rotated correctly.

Do Truth Bars need to be refrigerated?

No. This type of probiotic is not in a live state on the shelf, it is activated only after it’s eaten. For this reason, Truth Bars do not need to be refrigerated.

Gluten-free products are becoming easier to find in the grocery store, as well as the health food store. But that doesn’t mean they are the most nutritious choice for you. While they may help you avoid the bloating, abdominal pain, fatigue and skin rashes associated with gluten intolerances, they may also be loaded with added sugar. Alternative health expert Bryce Wylde gave Vancouver’s Breakfast Television Extra viewers his gluten-free, fiber bar recipe. These sweet snack bars offer a fiber boost, without any uncomfortable side effects.

Gluten refers to the proteins found in wheat, barley and rye. Gluten helps hold dough together and provides a chewy texture. Unfortunately, it can also cause havoc for people with celiac disease, an autoimmune disorder. “One in 117 people have full-blown celiac disease,” explained Wylde who added, “what’s even more shocking is that 97 percent of them don’t even know it.” Many other people are sensitive to gluten. “At the end of the day, whether you are celiac or gluten-sensitive,” Wylde warned, “gluten-free foods may not necessarily be healthier.” These products are often high in sugar and low in fiber. Wylde suggested making your own bars for an easy gluten-free snack which is rich in essential nutrients.

Gluten-free, Fiber Bars

2 cups gluten-free granola

2 tablespoons of nut butter (almond, cashew, peanut etc.)

1 tablespoon organic honey

¼ cup low-glycemic dried fruit, such as dried cranberries

1 tablespoon of antioxidant-rich cacao powder

1 scoop Sunfiber

Mix ingredients together until it forms a paste. Depending on the granola, you may need to add more nut butter. Place onto wax paper and roll into a log. Chill until firm, and then slice into individual servings.

Sunfiber is a gluten-free soluble fiber. It helps you meet your daily fiber requirement without any uncomfortable gas or bloating as with some other fiber supplements. We were glad to see it included in this recipe.
Soluble fiber is especially good for digestive health because it supports the growth of beneficial gut bacteria. “This fiber is imperative for an overall healthy gut and immune function,” said Wylde.

When you walk down the nutrition bar aisle of any grocery store, your eyes immediately go to the bars that boast “20+ grams of protein, low-sugar, low-carb!” But, have you ever asked yourself, “How is this possible?” Dozens of protein bars pack in whey protein powders, sugar alcohols and isolated soy protein to bulk up their bars.

These whey and soy based products often lead to tummy troubles for people with sensitive digestive systems, gastrointestinal issues, or gluten, soy or lactose intolerance. I personally spent over a year trying to find the perfect whey and soy-free protein bar, and after many afternoons of indigestion and many dollars lost from my wallet, I finally found them. To save you some time, money (and sanity), here is my list of the best whey and soy-free protein bars available.

9. Aloha Bar

Aloha uses a blend of pumpkin seed and pea protein to pack 14g of of plant-based protein into each bar. With each bar comes 260 calories and 14g of fat. This is the only bar on the list that I have not personally tested, but the reviews describe the bar as “flavorful but dense.” They also sell vegan, plant-based protein powder.

Pro: One of the higher ranking bars in terms of protein (14g), a portion of each purchase goes towards protecting island resources in Hawaii.

Con: These bars are difficult to find in stores (I have only seen them at Target), and buying them through their website will cost you $6.99 for a four-pack.

8. Go Macro

This is the bar I have tried most recently, after seeing it all over Instagram and figuring I should see what all the hype was about. And I’ll be honest, I was not super impressed. Each bar is cold-pressed and nut-butter (or sunflower butter) based, which gives these bars a nice, soft texture that isn’t too dense. Where they fall short for me is in their flavor. There isn’t much sweetness to these bars, and I find myself craving a glass of milk to help wash these down.

Pro: large bars, nut-allergy friendly option, best texture out of all the options

Con: expensive ($2.89/bar), not very sweet, some are low protein (4g)

7. Square Organics

These bars may look little, but they pack a lot of punch. 12g of protein, 9g of fat and 210 calories makes this bar a pretty standard protein bar, but what sets it apart is the taste. They have a ton of flavors, and every bar is free of gluten, dairy, soy and processed sugars, making this a great option for people with sensitive systems.

#SpoonTip: because these bars are so dense, I recommend chopping them up and adding them to your morning breakfast bowl, pancakes or yogurt.

Pro: widely available, sturdy (can sit in your backpack), no added “natural flavors”

Cons: expensive ($2.50/bar), smaller bar, very dense

6. Larabar

These would be #1 on my list if they had a higher protein count. These bars are chewy, flavorful, and made of 9 ingredients or less. Sadly, they round out at about 4-6g of protein per bar. However, they do have over 25 flavors, including three Superfood bars and three Nut & Seed crunch bars.

#SpoonTip: if you love Larabars but want more protein in your snacks, try making your own. You can add plant-based protein powder or more nuts/nut butters to up the protein content.

Pro: cheap ($1/bar), flavorful, very soft and chewy

Con: low protein count, not as filling, on the sweeter side

5. KIND Bars

KIND Bars are possibly one of the most well-known Fruit & Nut bars on the market. They’re a staple on most college campuses, and chances are you’ve gotten at least one free KIND Bar from a university event. KIND now has seven different varieties of their bars, ranging from original to Healthy Grains Bars, Pressed Bars and even Sweet & Spicy Bars. With so many varieties, they make it almost impossible for you to get tired of eating these.

Pro: extremely filling, widely available, large variety

Con: melt easily (the original bars), lower protein count (6g for original bars, 2g for grain bars)

4. RX Bar

I’ll be honest, I wasn’t a fan the first time I tried these. These bars are very dense, but that means they are extremely filling too. RXBar’s motto is “egg whites for protein, dates to bind, nuts for texture, no B.S.” They hit all the nails on the head with this one. At 210 calories, 9g of fat and 12g of protein, these bars sit in the normal range for plant-based bars, but are set apart by their amazing flavors, short ingredient list, and wide availability.

Pro: grain-free, reasonably priced ($2/bar), six ingredients or less, filling

Con: not vegan, very dense

3. Health Warrior

Health Warrior is best known for their chia bars, which are popular among runners, college kids and athletes. But did you know they also have protein bars? The superfood protein bar comes in five flavors, and each will provide about 11g of protein. The bars are formed with an ancient grain blend of chia seeds, quinoa and oats, giving the bars a beautiful texture.

Pro: some nut-allergy friendly options, filling, affordable ($1.50/bar)

Con: chia seed-base makes the bar very seedy

2. RawRev Glo

These bars are grain-free, which gives them a competitive edge over the other bars on this list. RawRev is 100% vegan, gluten-free, non-GMO, and kosher, and they pride themselves in using raw superfoods to build their bars. These chewy goodies taste more like a candy bar than a protein bar, and come in at 180 calories, 11g of fat, and 15g of protein.

Pro: grain-free, filling, high protein, amazing flavor

Con: very soft, natural oils coat the outside of the bar, difficult to find in stores

1. Zing Bar

Choose between chocolate covered, soft cookie or nut butter & fruit bars, and prepare to be WOWed no matter what you choose. These bars are what’s up. These have the consistency of a candy bar, the flavor is rich, and they are free of gluten, soy, sugar alcohols and artificial flavors. You’ve gotta try them all. But start with the Mint Chocolate Chip, because it tastes like a York peppermint patty.

Pro: reasonable price ($2/bar), vegan, amazing flavors

Con: difficult to find in stores, less filling

These bars are perfect for that pick-me-up on game day, in-between class snack, or on-the-go breakfast. Choosing a whey and soy-free protein bar can be fun. Pick a new flavor every time. Try a new brand. Close your eyes and just let your heart (and happy, not irritated tummy) lead you to the perfect bar.

Vegan Protein Bars

What are vegan protein bars and are they healthy?

In simple terms, a vegan protein bar contains zero animals based ingredients. Unlike a typical bar that uses whey protein (from cows milk), ours are made from plants. So, whether you’re a vegan, vegetarian or a meat eater, our bars are suitable for you. You’ll also find that vegan / plant-based products are typically healthier for you. Why? This is because animal products require more additives to keep them stable and to give them a much longer shelf life. Our aim is to create “clean” products that are free from artificial ingredients.

We only use raw, 100% all-natural, cruelty-free and sustainably sourced ingredients to create a vegan protein bar with the highest amount of protein available. Our entire range of products has been vegan approved by the Vegetarian Society.

All of our bars are high in protein, starting from 12g in our Live Well snack bars and over 21g in our original bar.

When can I use a protein bar?

Typically when you wanted to supplement your diet with some extra protein you would drink down a sugary protein shake. But not everyone wants to carry a protein shake around with them. On the other hand, our nutrition bars can be kept in your bag or pocket to be consumed whenever you like. Due to the higher protein content of a bar (at 21g per bar ours have some of the highest amounts available) it makes them ideal for your pre or post-workout supplementation. Not only that, you can consume them during the day instead of that unhealthy chocolate cookie. They also make an ideal breakfast replacement.

Buy vegan protein bars from a brand you can trust

Unlike a lot of other protein bars that you can buy, we actually produce our own from our purpose-built factory. You might think why does that matter? For starters, we can 100% confidently say to you exactly what ingredients go into each of our products, and we can also tell you exactly where all of the raw materials we use are sourced from. For example, the high-quality pea protein that we use is sustainably sourced from Europe. We could purchase this raw material from other parts of the world, at a much lower cost, but we believe that quality should always come before profit.

Are your protein bars gluten free?

In one word. Yes! Our vegan protein bars are not only gluten free, but they are also free from dairy, wheat and soya. As we mentioned above, our products are always high-quality so this means that we never add any nasties into them to improve the texture or taste. We don’t cut corners when it comes to providing a product that people eat.

I’m not a vegan or vegetarian

This isn’t a problem! In fact, if you’re looking for a much healthier protein bar then we suggest you look for vegan approved products instead. You’ll typically find that vegan protein bars are much healthier than animal-based, whey alternatives, due to the ingredients used in them.
