Open on memorial day

Contents

These are the restaurants and stores open on Memorial Day. Plus, who is closed

Shoppers wanting to take advantage of Memorial Day sales or just looking to pick up a few groceries are in luck.

Unlike Christmas, Easter and Thanksgiving, most major retailers are open Monday with one super-sized exception – Costco Wholesale clubs are closed Monday like they are for other holidays, including New Year’s Day, Easter, Independence Day and Labor Day.

Some stores, including many Aldi locations, will have special holiday hours and many pharmacies will be closed.

For some Payless ShoeSource and Fred’s stores, it’s the last weekend to shop liquidation sales. Many Payless stores and 159 Fred’s stores included in a round of closings announced April 11 are expected to shutter by the end of May.

The holiday weekend also is a good weekend to buy a car, a mattress and shop other sales.

If you’re not in the mood to fire up the grill, most restaurants will be open. For stores and restaurants, hours can vary so to be on the safe side check with your closest location.

Should You Keep Your Restaurant Open on a Federal Holiday?

Who doesn’t love a federal holiday? For consumers, it’s all three-day weekends, parties, vacations, and amazing retail sales.

If you run a restaurant, the prospect of a federal holiday may not be quite as exciting. Overtime requirements mean that staying open on a holiday costs more than the average weekday. So it’s only profitable if you have higher-than-average traffic coming through the door.

Full Service at Full Speed

Try Square for Restaurants free for 30 days.

To get an idea of how restaurants across the country approach this issue, we looked at Square seller data from Labor Day 2017 to see how many restaurants in each city closed and how many stayed open during the holiday.

Let’s start with cities that closed their doors for Labor Day last year. More than half the restaurants in Phoenix closed for Labor Day last year. That was the highest percentage in the country. It was followed by Orlando (41 percent), Minneapolis (38 percent), Salt Lake City (37 percent), and Atlanta (36 percent), to close out the top five.

Many of the cities in the top 10 are well-trafficked tourist destinations. Four of them were among the 10 most-visited cities in the U.S. in 2017, and four were among the most-visited cities on Labor Day in the same year. So the percentage of closures might have less to do with how many people frequent those destinations than it does with overtime requirements or cultural norms.

Among those cities where the most restaurants are open, San Antonio comes in at number one — 96 percent of its restaurants are open. It’s followed by Brooklyn (89 percent), Sacramento (85 percent), Washington, D.C. (84 percent), and Seattle (83 percent) rounding out the top five.

Many of the cities that remain open at high percentages aren’t surprising. New York and Brooklyn, Las Vegas, San Francisco, and Washington, D.C., are also among the most-visited cities in the country (whether it’s Labor Day or any other time of year).

Should you stay open on a federal holiday?

While broad trends like this can help you determine what is relatively normal in your region, you shouldn’t base your decision on trends alone. You need to look at the norms in your area, labor costs, and the performance of your business during similar periods.

Here are a few questions to ask:

How much business did I do on the same holiday last year?

Your point-of-sale system should provide built-in analytics so you can pull sales reports by day or weekend (and location if you have more than one shop). If you don’t have data from the holiday in question, pull data from a similar holiday. If you’re a new business, that’s when you want to look at broader trends — in your county, city, and neighborhood.

Are there activities in my area that bring in a lot of visitors? What do locals do during the holiday?

If you’ve lived in your city or town for a while, you probably have a good idea of what’s going on during a holiday weekend. Maybe your area hosts a special event or festival that brings a lot of people into town. Or maybe it’s very quiet since a lot of locals leave.

If you haven’t lived in your area for long, read through local newspapers, community calendars, etc., to get an idea of what goes on during the three-day weekend.

What are your neighbors doing? What is your competition doing?

Talk to your neighbors, especially if you are a new business. They could provide a valuable point of view as to whether or not it’s worth it to stay open.

You should also check up on what your competitors’ plans are. If they’re open, it doesn’t mean you have to be also, but it could inform your opinion.

How much staff do I need to stay open?

Based on your data and your community research, think about how much staff you want on hand if you stay open. Do you need to be fully staffed or could you get by with fewer workers? (Err on the side of caution here — you don’t want to be understaffed.)

Do I want to stay open all day?

Just because you’re open on a holiday doesn’t mean you need to keep regular hours. If you usually serve breakfast, lunch, and dinner, do you want to just stay open for breakfast and lunch? If you’re a cafe, could you open later?

A shortened day could not only be more profitable but also could make your employees quite happy.

If I stay open, what are the labor costs?

If you’re considering staying open on a holiday, make sure you’re up to date on all the overtime and holiday labor requirements by consulting an attorney or an accountant. These laws vary by state and, in some cases, by county and city.

Come up with an estimate for your labor costs. Add that to your other operating costs and determine what kind of revenue you would have to bring in to make a profit. If it seems reasonable, based on your research, go ahead and stay open. If not, close up.

Whichever way you go, make sure you communicate it to your customers via email, social media, your website, review sites, and any other communication channels available to you. Whether or not you plan to stay open, this keeps you top of mind.

What’s open and closed on Memorial Day?

Maybe you’re planning a big blowout to celebrate the arrival of summer and honor the soldiers who have served the United States. Maybe you just want to get your errands done and enjoy a burger sometime over the course of the long weekend. No matter where you fall in the spectrum, you’re going to need to know what’s open on Memorial Day. After all, you don’t want to run out for more burger buns and cheese only to find out that your go-to store is closed.

We’ll save you from wasting that trip with our guide to what’s open on Memorial Day below. You’ll find answers to your questions if you’re an outside grilling type celebrator or the type that likes to kick it indoors with the AC on full blast.

Are stores open on Memorial Day?

Have you seen all those ads for Memorial Day sales? Yep, we thought so. Rest assured that many big box or chain stores are open through the long weekend and eager to get you through the door to drop a little dough. We’ll break down some of the biggest stores you might have in mind when you’re wondering what’s open on Memorial day.

We know you probably have a couple specific stores in mind for restocking barbecue supply purposes. If that’s the case, check out guide to is Costco open on Memorial Day? We also break down what you need to know about Walmart and its hours on this national holiday.

Is Target open on Memorial Day?

Your other go-to might be Target since some of the larger locations pack in everything from groceries to kitchen appliances. (That’s why you can’t leave the store without dropping at least $100 every trip.) Good news for fans of the brand. Target will be open on Memorial Day.

Grocery stores

Chain grocery stores follow the same general rule. If you plan on hitting Whole Foods, Wegmans, Trader Joe’s, Harveys Supermarket, Publix, Safeway, ShopRite, Kroger, Giant, or Aldi locations it’s worth a quick call ahead to make sure the location is open since some states mandate changes on national holidays. Otherwise you can count on these stores being open. If you have a smaller regional chain or local grocery store in your area, call ahead just to make sure you won’t show up to find it shut down.

Hardware

Need something from a hardware store last minute? Whether you’re in the market for a hammer or some lawn care, you can head out to ACE Hardware, Lowe’s, or The Home Depot. Again, specific locations might have altered hours for the holiday, but most will be open.

Clothing and home goods

If you’re booked all weekend but hoping the sales continue into Monday, you’re going to want to set your GPS for the nearest locations of Kohl’s, HomeGoods, Guitar Center, Dollar Tree, Dollar General, Dick’s Sporting Goods, Champ Sports, Bloomingdale’s, Best Buy, Bass Pro Shops, Barnes & Noble, IKEA, Kmart, Macy’s, Marshalls, Michaels, Modell’s, Office Depot, Petco, Pier 1 Imports, Staples or Bed, Bath and Beyond. For all of these stores, most of the locations will be open. Get your shop on.

Drug stores

Count on Walgreens, CVS (which means Duane Reade, too, for all of you New Yorkers) and Rite Aid to be there for you should you need anything from Bandaids to feminine care products. Just in case your party doesn’t go perfectly as planned.

Are restaurants open on Memorial Day?

Although you’ll need to call local restaurant to check on their hours (the owners might want the day off, too, you know), most chain restaurants and fast casual dining options will be open and ready to serve you and your friends. Get excited if you’re a fan of Applebee’s, Arby’s, Au Bon Pain, Bailey’s Sports Grille, Baja Fresh, Benihana, BJ’s Restaurant & Brewhouse, Black Angus Steakhouse, Boston Market, Buffalo Wild Wings, California Pizza Kitchen, Carrabba’s Italian Grill, The Cheesecake Factory, Chili’s, Chuck E. Cheese’s, Cosi, Cracker Barrel, Denny’s, IHOP, Five Guys Burgers & Fries, Friendly’s, Jamba Juice, Krispy Kreme, Lone Star Steakhouse, P.F. Chang’s, Panera Bread, Potbelly Sandwich Shop, Red Lobster, Ruby Tuesday or T.G.I. Friday’s. Most locations of all of these will be open.

Fast food

Of course you can get your fast food fix on the long weekend. Most locations of Arby’s, Auntie Anne’s, Burger King, Chipotle, Cinnabon, Domino’s, Hardee’s / Carl’s Jr, In-N-Out Burger, Pizza Hut, Taco Bell, Wendy’s, Whataburger and White Castle will be open on Memorial Day.

What about the Golden Arches? We have you covered in our guide to is McDonalds open on Memorial Day.

Ice cream

Ok, we know they fall under the other categories, but the first official holiday of the summer deserves a special ice cream run, and we felt like it needed its own section. You can trust that most locations of Baskin Robbins, Ben & Jerry’s, Carvel Ice Cream, Cold Stone Creamery, Dairy Queen and Haagen-Dazs are open and ready to dish up some sundaes, soft serve and everything in between.

Are banks open on Memorial Day?

Sorry, this one’s a no. We know it might be annoying to run to the bank a day other than the one you had planned, but at least it ensures that you won’t be standing in line waiting to make a deposit on one of the biggest grilling days of the year. Kick up your feet and enjoy the forced relaxation time thanks to this federal holiday.

You’ll still have access to some ATMs, and your bank’s website can help you find the closest one. Mobile banking apps are an option, although transfers and deposits will likely be delayed until the following Tuesday to really hit your account.

Is the post office open on Memorial Day? Is mail delivered on Memorial Day?

Since Memorial Day is a federal holiday and all non-essential government offices are shut down, the post office will not be open on that Monday. Mail will also not be delivered, so if you’re expecting an important document, don’t freak out if it doesn’t come before Tuesday.

But what about UPS and FedEx? Both of these companies will also suspend their pick-up and delivery services in honor of the holiday celebrating the soldiers who have served the country.

After calling a few local Subway restaurants, Heavy was informed that the hours will definitely be reduced on Christmas Eve, so if you want to grab a sandwich Tuesday afternoon, you’ll have to grab one before 3 p.m. Again, those hours will likely vary depending on your location, but most places typically close in the early evening to allow the employees to celebrate the holiday with family.

According to Store Holiday Hours, the majority of Subway restaurants generally stay open on the following holidays, although reduced hours may apply:

– New Year’s Day
– Martin Luther King, Jr. Day (MLK Day)
– Valentine’s Day
– Presidents Day
– Mardi Gras Fat Tuesday
– St. Patrick’s Day
– Good Friday
– Easter Sunday
– Easter Monday
– Cinco de Mayo
– Mother’s Day
– Memorial Day
– Father’s Day
– Independence Day (4th of July)
– Labor Day
– Columbus Day
– Halloween
– Veterans Day
– Black Friday
– Cyber Monday
– Christmas Eve
– New Year’s Eve

Although Thanksgiving is not listed above, Heavy reached out to Subway’s PR office last month to inquire about the holiday hours. A representative of the franchise wrote, “Each Subway restaurant is individually owned and operated so participation may vary as the owners determine holiday hours. However, we do encourage guests to use the store locator page here to contact their local restaurant for hours and availability.”

The stores Heavy contacted also noted that they will have reduced hours on New Year’s Eve, and will also be open on New Year’s Day, although they will open slightly later in the day on January 1. Again, we always recommend calling ahead to confirm the hours before heading out to your local store so you don’t waste a trip.

The Subway brand started more than 50 years ago when Dr. Peter Buck, a nuclear physicist, teamed up with college freshman Fred DeLuca to open a submarine sandwich shop, according to the Subway website. Buck thought the sandwich shop would help DeLuca pay for his college tuition, so Buck provided an initial investment of $1,000, and the two forged a business relationship that the franchise claims “changed the landscape of the fast food industry and the lives of thousands.”

The sandwich chain has three core values included in their mission statement, including to always provide exceptional service to guests, to provide the highest quality menu items at affordable prices, and to keep operating costs as low as possible to ensure customers have the best experience imaginable.

“These early principles continue to serve as the foundation for Subway restaurants around the world,” the website states.

Schools and most businesses in the United States will close for Labor Day on September 2—a public holiday which honors workers in America. This Labor Day has extra significance given that it is the 125th anniversary of the holiday.

The first version of the holiday was celebrated on Tuesday, September 5, 1882 in New York City. Its creation, in large part, was thanks to the efforts of the Central Labor Union which wanted to create a holiday for workers, according to the U.S. Department of Labor.

The idea behind the holiday was to give the public a chance to appreciate the achievements of American workers and U.S. trade organizations.

By 1894, 23 more states had decided to adopt the celebration and in June of that year, President Grover Cleveland signed a law declaring that the first Monday of September every year will be a national holiday.

If you’re searching for a place to eat while you spend Labor Day with friends and family here’s a handy list of some of America’s most popular restaurants that will be open on Monday.

It’s worth bearing in mind, however, that some franchise locations may decide to stay closed, so remember to check the opening hours for your local branch.

Jack in the Box: Jack in the Box stores tend to be open 24 hours a day and will be serving on Monday.

KFC: KFC restaurants tend to be open between 10:30 a.m. and 10 p.m. although these times do vary. The popular fried chicken shop will be keeping its stores open on Monday.

McDonald’s: The world’s largest restaurant chain has more than 14,000 outlets across the country. These are typically open on public holidays, including Labor Day.

All Kohl’s locations will be closed on Christmas Day, and will re-open at 7 a.m. on December 26. That said, stores may operate on holiday schedules with reduced hours during ‘open’ holidays, and some locations will open late and/or close early. It’s still a good idea to check whether your nearest location is following similar hours before heading down to your nearest Kohl’s location. You can access the store locator page by clicking here. We do recommend putting in your city and zip code to see what hours are listed on the website.

Fortunately, the Kohl’s holiday offers continue well into 2020.
