Next’s black sleeveless crepe mini dress, €31
simply be’s black shape and sculpt sweetheart dress, €77.50

Spice up your fashion life: How to get the Spice Girls look
No matter how many weird and wonderful fashion trends come and go, the brazen and buoyant styles of the 1990s live on.
Yes, the shoes were preposterously large, the latex was worryingly shiny and all that neon was practically blinding, but somehow, it worked.
Of course, nobody rocked those gaudy staples quite the Spice Girls.

When the pop group arrived on the British music scene in 1996, Geri Halliwell and Victoria Beckham posed as showgirls in statement mini-dresses, Melanie “Mel C” Chisholm soon became a poster girl for sportswear grunge while Emma Bunton was the Barbie-fied “girl next door”, and Melanie “Mel B” Brown just wore as much leopard print as she possibly could.
While their looks might’ve been revolutionary at the time, key components such as tie-dye and chunky boots have made a comeback in recent months as designers seek to rework classic staples from the era.

As the iconic girl band reunite for a highly anticipated reunion tour this month – one that sadly does not include an otherwise engaged Beckham (aka “Posh Spice”) – here’s everything you need to know about channelling their infamous style in 2019 without looking like you’re going to a fancy dress party.
Throw comfort to the wind and seek out the highest platform trainers you can find (Rex)
Few shoe labels are as synonymous with the Spice Girls as Buffalo.
The German footwear brand might make trainers with platforms that rival that of your highest stiletto, but its shoes were a key staple in the 1990s.
Buffalo has also revived itself as a cult shoe, partnering with Japanese fashion designer Junya Watanabe last year for a playful range of platforms that featured faux fur-linings and patent-leather exteriors.
Saks Potts, Shearling-trimmed leather jacket: £511; Junya Watanabe x Buffalo, Patent-leather platform sneakers: £178; Agolde, ’90s mid-rise straight jeans: £240; Zara, Textured geometric earrings: £12.99; Calvin Klein, Printed stretch sports bra: £45
Hannah Craggs, senior youth editor at trend forecaster WGSN, tells The Independent that Buffalo’s resurgence “taps into the 1990s and early Noughties nostalgia currently gripping the youth market, where stacked soles are gaining commercial traction”.
If you want to make a contemporary statement in Buffalos this summer, try pairing them with some straight-leg jeans and a slim-fitting T-shirt for a structured silhouette.
The hemlines were high and the fabrics were glossy (Rex)
Slip dresses are a must-have for anyone craving to capture the sartorial spirit of the 1990s. While strappy sheer styles are perfect for those inspired by Kate Moss, if it’s a certain girl band’s style you’re trying to replicate, you have to up the ante, or, dare we say, spice up your life with rising hemlines and metallic prints.
To make the style work for you today, think “slinky club dresses meets brash rave-wear”, says Craggs, who points to the millennial model-pack (think Bella Hadid and Kendall Jenner) for inspiration on how to tackle the trend with a contemporary eye.
Opt for statement and textured materials where possible, she adds, such as metallic shades or tie-dye. And if a dress is too impractical, try a slip skirt instead and throw an oversized vintage T-shirt over the top.
Realisation Par, The Naomi: £175; Misho, Chunky chain necklace: £350; Timberland, Premium boots: £170; Charlotte Simone, Lil pop bag: £250; Ganni, Printed jersey T-shirt: £45
As for brands, look to House of Holland for tight-fitting neon options, MSGM for eye-catching prints and Realisation Par for the flowing midi skirts you’ve seen all over Instagram.
The Fendi Baguette was a staple accessory during the 1990s, as seen on everyone from Geri Halliwell to Sarah Jessica Parker.
Now, thanks to fans such as Hadid, the cult shoulder bag has been thrust back into the sartorial spotlight.
“The Dior Saddlebag is another key driver of this trend,” notes Craggs. “These vintage gems are beginning to appear on the streets as well as in regular postings on the Instagram feeds of luxury resale platforms.”
The Dior Saddlebag is a classic piece for nostalgic fashion fans thanks to its logomania detail, which was hugely popular at the time (Rex)
If the designer price tags are too much to bear, look to high street heroes such as H&M and & Other Stories for similar options.
Mel B and Mel C pictured at the ‘Austin Powers’ premier in 1999 (Rex)
Tinted sunglasses are the ultimate 1990s accessory and they continue to be a commercial hit today, says Craggs, who says the most popular hues hail from a warm palette. Think yellow, orange and rosy pink, as seen on Mel C above.
Don’t be afraid to choose super-slim styles either. Sure, they may do very little to protect your eyes from the blazing sunshine, but as we’ve already seen with the absurdly high-platformed shoes, practicality isn’t really a priority here.
Arket, ReDown puffer jacket: £150; Maison Margiela, Retro fit patent-leather sneakers: £487; MAC, Retro matte lipstick: £17.50; Le Specs x Adam Selman, The Coupe cat-eye metal sungalsses: £75; H&M, Short jersey unitard: £14.99
“Tiny frames are peak 1990s,” Craggs adds. Look for wraparound and shield designs, the more lightweight the better. A handful of brands champion this very aesthetic, namely, Le Specs. Start there.
Cargo trousers and tracksuit bottoms might have a space in today’s streetwear-obsessed fashion scene, but the athleisure trend actually originated in the Spice Girls era, says Craggs.
Mel C – often seen in a sports bra and a pair of utility trousers – was a particular proponent of the style.
Mel B rocking her gold metallic flares (Rex)
Flares play a key role too, as seen on Mel B above in a gold metallic style. You can find contemporary flares at a number of boutique labels, such as La Llama and SAS, which produce plush velvet pairs that come in flattering fits.
But note that if you want to go for a flamboyant print or texture, it’s best to steer clear of vivid neons on top. Instead, try pairing your flares with a ribbed jersey cropped T-shirt in a plain colour to offset the playfulness, suggests Craggs.
Unless, that is, you want to audition to be in a Spice Girls tribute band, in which case, more is more.
How To Dress Like Your Favorite Spice Girls In Honor Of Spice World‘s 20th Anniversary
This winter marks the 20th anniversary of the premiere of Spice World—aka one of the most iconic movies of our adolescence. Tour buses flying through the air, secret bombs hidden on said buses and adorable British singers running through the streets of London in platform sneakers without batting a heavily mascaraed eyelash? We can’t think of anything better. What’s more, there were few girls who embodied the epitome of style in the late ’90s and early-aughts quite like the Spice Girls. Ginger, Scary, Sporty, Baby and—of course—Posh pulled out all the stops when it came to their instantly recognizable fashion.
With the two-decade celebration of their film falling so close to Halloween, we’re expecting the costume-friendly holiday to be rife with groups of five, all standing in formation as one of our favorite British girl groups ever. The only question is: How to make it stylish for today? We’ve adapted each girl’s look, mixing in Chelsea boots, midi slip dresses and modern-day athleisure so we can rock these outfits on Halloween and mix certain pieces into our wardrobe for months to come. Ahead, check out how we’re channeling the Spice Girls’ style this season.
Spice Up Your Life
Known for her little black dresses and modern take on Audrey Hepburn’s Breakfast at Tiffany’s style, Victoria Beckham’s Posh is the easiest of the girls’ style to emulate, Halloween or not. In fact, between the classic minidress, stiletto heels and glitzy-yet-understated jewelry and accessories, this is a look we’ll be wearing long after the jack-o’-lanterns are taken down.
With a penchant for light pink and blue tones, Emma Bunton took childhood trends into adulthood with her onstage persona, Baby. This season, we’re reaching for a ’90s slip dress in dusty rose and going all out with our childhood microtrends by adding a pair of platform sneakers and whimsical fur. On All Hallows’ Eve itself, we might mix in knee socks for even more of a themed look.
Perhaps the embodiment of one of our favorite current trends, Melanie C’s Sporty vibe is on point with every celebrity’s favorite athleisure look. With a pair of track pants, ribbed tank and bomber jacket, you’re good to go. We might even start saving our pennies for a splurge-worthy take on the best ’90s tattoo choker necklace. Hey, a girl can dream…
If there was one girl who went all out when it came to animal-inspired trends, it was Melanie B’s Scary. Her wardrobe, rife with leopard, was an edgy one, to be sure. She often reached for leather and chain jewelry, mixing chunky shoes into the mix on most occasions. We’re elevating her stage style by trading catsuits for midi dresses but keeping the vibe alive in textures and in tones.
Though an icon of the ’90s and ’00s, Geri Halliwell’s Ginger harkened back to the ’60s in style—a truly iconic sartorial time in London. This fiery redhead was known for her Union Jack patterns and retro-style boots. To make the look more wearable, we’re styling the Abbey Road vibe with suede and a killer pair of Chelsea boots to finish off the look.
Mel B dresses up as herself in Scary Spice costume for Halloween
Mel B is the woman of the moment after her excellent performance as a judge on the X Factor.
But she’s gone up even further in our estimation thanks to her brilliant Halloween costume.
The singer and her family attended Jonathan Ross’s famous annual fright night bash in London on Friday and she decided to go as, well, herself.
Mel seemed to have raided her Spice Girls costumes wardrobe and whipped out a leopard print catsuit from her days as Scary Spice.
And she even had a pair of towering platform shoes to boot taking us right back to the ‘90s and the happy, happy memories associated with the decade.
But to bring her look up to date and add a bit of, err, scariness to her outfit, Mel added a pair of cat’s ears.
The star posted a picture of herself with husband Stephen Belefonte and her children Angel, Madison and Phoenix on Instagram the following day.
Along with the snap, she wrote: “Yes to Halloween dresses up as myself of course thanks to @julienmacdonald for my outfit yipppeeeee.”
We hope this makes the rest of the Spice Girls want to dress up as themselves again! REUNION!

Mel B’s Halloween costume this year had a jovial message for Victoria Beckham: please take part in the Spice Girls reunion. The famed ’90s girl group are strongly rumoured to reform next year, but without the woman formerly known as Posh Spice.
However, Melanie Brown is clearly hoping her ex-bandmate might change her mind still. She and her hairdresser, Gary Madatyan, arrived at Heidi Klum’s renowned Halloween party decked out as Victoria and David Beckham, complete with placards urging her to partake in the alleged 2018 Spice reunion.
Wearing Posh Spice’s signature LBD and a VB mask, she carried a placard which read, “No I am going on tour”, with a small “not” written underneath, underlining the designer’s reluctance to join the comeback.
Madatyan wore a Beckham football shirt, jogging bottoms, trainers and sunglasses, along with a sign that said, “Please, please, please do it for the Spice Girls fans”. Beckham herself has not yet responded.

Mel B, Mel C, Geri Horner and Emma Bunton are expected to come together on the Jonathan Ross chat show next week, airing on ITV. Beckham is reportedly not joining them, and has explicitly said, “I am not going on tour. The girls are not going on tour.”
However, the rumours have continued to mount about a possible reunion. The group are also reportedly working on an animated film project inspired by their ‘girl power’ ethos.
Dress Up as Sporty Spice!
If you’re part of a group that wants to dress up as the ever-popular girl-band the Spice Girls, a Sporty Spice Halloween costume is one of the easiest and most comfortable styles to recreate!
About the Spice Girls
Rather than opt for a single Hollywood costume character, many teens opt to dress in group fashions. The Spice Girls are a popular costume idea for good reason. While the Spice Girls made their debut in the British pop scene back in 1994, the band members have continued to spark media attention, especially Victoria Beckham (then Victoria Adams), who is still known for her refined, high-heel wearing fashion. The five Spice Girls members included Sporty Spice, Posh Spice, Ginger Spice, Scary Spice, and Baby Spice.
Melanie Chilsom/Sporty Spice was defined by her playful and athletic style. If you want to recreate this famous girl band, a Sporty Spice Halloween costume can be pulled together with items you probably already have in your closet!
Creating a Sporty Spice Halloween Costume
If you choose to dress as Sporty, chances are you’ll be the comfiest gal in the group. Sporty lived in athletic wear, and if you have an athletic physique, you’ll have the added benefit of showing it off! Here’s a few ways to pull off the Sporty Spice Halloween costume flawlessly:
- Hair: Sporty Spice had long brown hair that was usually pulled up in a high ponytail. If you have short or medium locks, the first thing you’ll need to do is purchase a long hair wig. Many wigs can be purchased in pre-made ponytail styles, which will be much easier than buying a wig and trying to pin it up, since costume wigs are really not meant to be styled. A bright cotton scrunchie tied in the pony will enhance this era of fashion.
- Tracksuit: A tracksuit is the most practical choice for Sporty Spice. A layered tracksuit will enable you some options should the weather be chilly come Halloween night. A brand new designer brand athletic tracksuit (Adidas, Nike, Puma) will ensure your Sporty Spice look is polished! Under the track jacket, you can simply wear a sports bra, or opt for a cotton tank or yoga top for added coverage.
- Athletic shoes: You can wear whatever athletic shoes you’re comfortable in when rocking a Sporty Spice costume, just make sure they are stylish and look good with the rest of your tracksuit. Platform tennis shoes, although not practical for sports, can be worn to add any desired height to your costume ensemble.
- Temporary tattoos: Because Sporty Spice was the tough gal in the group, adding some temporary tattoos to your body will help you recreate her girl-power look. A few armbands, a hip tattoo, or even a lower back temporary design is the perfect accessory to complete Sporty’s image.
- Glitzy makeup: Just because Sporty was athletic didn’t mean she was a stranger to cosmetics. Sporty played with a variety of fun makeup looks, including glitter dust and cat eye makeup. Add some sparkle to your Sporty Spice costume with playful and feminine cosmetics!
Get the Group Together
With a bit of planning, you and four others can make a fabulous Spice Girls pairing. Once you’ve selected who will dress as who, you can start scouring your closets to find the fundamental pieces for each of your individual costumes. While you can certainly dress as Sporty Spice in solo, dressing in a group is the best way to get recognized as this girl band, while providing plenty of girl-bonding and dress-up time amongst friends!
